Steering gear:
1 - tie rod;
2 - thrust with an internal ball joint;
3 - steering column;
4 — a protective cover of the steering mechanism;
5 - steering column adjustment lever;
6 - steering wheel
To reduce the force applied to the steering wheel to turn it, hydraulic power steering is installed on cars. As an additional force, a high-pressure fluid is used, which is supplied to the working cylinders located on the steering gear. The distribution valve is used to pump fluid into the power cylinder under pressure, which corresponds to the angle of rotation of the steering wheel. Diverter valves operate according to the so-called open center principle, i.e. when the control valve is inactive, the liquid supplied by the pump is bypassed back into the reservoir at zero pressure. The hydraulic system is pressurized by a pump driven by a belt from the engine crankshaft pulley.
The steering gear is connected to the steering shaft through an intermediate shaft.
Attention. In the event of a malfunction of the electric power steering, the following warning messages are displayed on the on-board computer display:
- «Direction a controler» («Check steering»), accompanied by the steady light of the signal lamp «Service»,
- «Direction defaillanbe» («Steering malfunction»), accompanied by the steady light of the signal lamp «Stop»,
- flashing light (with a frequency of 8 Hz) signal lamp «Service» indicates that the steering angle is not calibrated (ECU not programmed).
Note. When diagnosing, the signal lamp «Service» flashes at 2 Hz.
Tightening torques
Power steering mechanism:
1 - ECU of the electric power steering with a torque and angle sensor;
2 - stepper motor with worm gear;
3 — a gear wheel of a reducer;
4 - intermediate shaft of the steering system;
5 - fork of the universal joint of the steering shaft in the cabin.
