Automatic transmission fluid — level check, replacement (Renault Symbol 2)

The working fluid is filled into the gearbox for its entire service life. During operation, small leaks may occur, in which case it will be necessary to top up the oil to the level. Periodically check the fluid level in the automatic transmission and top up the fluid if necessary.

Total volume of automatic transmission filling with ELF RENAULTMATIC D3 SYN fluid (DEXRON III) is 6 liters.

Lubricants and adhesives:

Single use details:

• Rubber sealing rings.
• Gaskets.
• Self-locking nuts.

Checking the fluid level

Always perform the test using the method described below.

1. Place the vehicle on a horizontal surface.

2. Fill the automatic transmission with 0.5 liters of fresh working fluid.

3. Start the engine at idle speed.

4. Connect the diagnostic tester and select the dialogue function with the automatic transmission control unit.

5. Monitor the temperature of the working fluid.

6. When the liquid temperature reaches 60°C±1°C, open the filler cap.

7. Place a container under the plug (not less than 0.1 l) to catch excess liquid and wait for the liquid to drain drop by drop.

8. If less than 0.1 liter of fluid has drained, turn off the engine and add another 0.5 liters of fresh fluid. Warm the fluid up to 50°C and repeat steps 3-6.

Attention: When replacing the working fluid, it is necessary to reset the fluid service life counter built into the control unit. This is done using the NXR command "Record date of working fluid change".

Tightening torque:

• Drain plug - 25 Nm
• Filler plug - 35 Nm

The working fluid is replaced only if there is certainty that it is damaged or needs to be drained for repairs. Draining the fluid and checking its level is a difficult job, so we strongly recommend that car enthusiasts contact car service specialists to perform this work. To check the fluid level, special diagnostic equipment is needed that can measure the temperature of the fluid. Below is information for those who can use such equipment.

Draining order

• warm up the working fluid in the gearbox by doing a short run, the optimum temperature is 60°C;
• place the car horizontally, it is best to carry out this operation on a ditch, lift or overpass;
• remove the lower protective cover of the power unit;

Note: The plug serves two functions:

• draining liquid (neck removal)
• refueling (cork removal)

• place a suitable container under the gearbox. Unscrew the plug and drain the fluid completely into the container (Figure 4.35). Please note that the drain and level plugs are combined into one block; drain plug - larger hexagon (Figure 4.36);
• after the leak has finished, clean the threads in the body and on the plug, put a new sealing washer on the plug, screw the plug back on and tighten it securely.

Procedure for filling the working fluid

Filling of the automatic transmission is carried out through the hole (D).

Fill through a funnel with a filter to prevent dirt from entering the system.

• remove the intake manifold in the engine compartment to gain access to the filler plug on top of the box (Figure 4.37);

• unscrew the filler plug and pour in 3.5 liters of automatic transmission fluid using a clean funnel with a mesh filter. Tighten the plug to the specified torque;
• connect the Renault XR25 diagnostic tester to the diagnostic connector and enter the code D14, then #04. After moving the selector lever to the "P" position, start the engine and warm it up at idle speed until the working fluid reaches a temperature of (60±1.0)°C;
• without stopping the engine, unscrew the measuring plug;
• place a container for collecting excess liquid of at least 0.1 l and wait until it starts to drain drop by drop, then tighten the plug. More than 0.1 l should drain, otherwise the liquid level in the box will be incorrect;

• if the level is incorrect, add another 0.5 l of the prescribed type of liquid as described above. Allow the liquid to cool to 50°C and check the level again;
• repeat the operation until the prescribed amount of fluid has drained from the box, then tighten the plug securely. Install the powertrain protective cover and air intake duct;
• without disconnecting the tester, enter the G74* command, then the date to reset the previous fluid aging data. After completing the operation, disconnect the tester.
