If the engine does not start on the first try, turn off the ignition and try again within 30 seconds at the earliest.
When starting a very hot engine, lightly depress the fuel pedal.
Starting a cold engine may be accompanied for a short time by increased noise associated with the start of operation of the hydraulic pushers of the gas distribution mechanism; after 15-20 seconds the noise will disappear. At temperatures below -20°C, it is recommended to turn on the ignition for a few seconds and only then start the engine with a starter.
There is no need to warm up the engine, you must immediately start moving, however, do not move at a high engine speed until the engine is fully warmed up.
Tips for Difficulty Starting the Engine
Figure 2.15. Checking the condition and reliability of contact with the wires of the battery terminals
If the vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, make sure the selector lever is in the «R» or «N». If the starter does not crank the engine, check the battery terminals for tightness and cleanliness (Figure 2.15). You can estimate the degree of charge of the battery by the brightness of the headlights - when the battery is discharged, their light is significantly weakened.
If the starter cranks the engine but it won't start, check for gasoline in the fuel tank.
Figure 2.16. Checking the reliability of the coil and spark plug connections
Turn off the ignition and check the reliability of the connection of high-voltage wires to the spark plugs and ignition coils (Figure 2.16). Check up reliability of connections of electric wires and nozzles of cylinders.
In wet weather, wipe the spark plug wires with a dry cloth and spray them with WD-40 water-repellent spray.
Starting the engine with an auxiliary battery
Before connecting the wires from the auxiliary battery, make sure that the ignition on the car and consumers of electricity are turned off, the voltage of the connected battery is the same as the voltage of your car. Cars must not touch each other. The shift lever must be in the neutral position.
Figure 2.17. Connecting the auxiliary battery to start the engine: 1, 2, 3, 4 - the order of connecting the terminals; A - rechargeable battery; B - auxiliary battery
Wire connection procedure (Figure 2.17):
- terminal «+» connect the discharged battery to the corresponding terminal of the charged battery;
- terminal «–» of a charged battery, connect it to a metal (non-isolated) part of the running engine.
Make sure that the connecting wires do not touch the fan, drive belts or other rotating parts of the engine. Start the engine with a starter and after its steady operation at an idling speed, disconnect the wires in the reverse order of connection.
