Transportation of children
Regardless of road conditions, a child, like an adult passenger, must be correctly positioned in the seat and be fastened. You are responsible for the children you are taking.
A child is not a miniature adult. He is at risk of other injuries as his muscles and bones are in the growth stage. One seat belt is not enough to transport a child. Purchase the required child seat and install it correctly.
Use a child safety device to prevent the doors from opening (see section «Opening and closing doors» in chapter 1).
Using a child seat
The level of protection offered by a child seat depends on its ability to hold your child and how well it is installed. Incorrect installation will impair your child's protection in the event of sudden braking or impact.
Before purchasing a child seat, make sure that it complies with the regulations of the country in which you are located and that it can be installed in your vehicle. Contact the manufacturer's dealer for advice on the child seats recommended for your vehicle.
Read and follow these instructions before installing the child seat. If you experience difficulties with installation, contact the equipment manufacturer. Keep the instructions with the seat.
A car hitting an obstacle at a speed of 50 km / h is equivalent to falling from a 10-meter height. Transporting a child unfastened is like leaving him to play unsupervised on the balcony of the fourth floor without a railing!
It is forbidden to hold a child in your arms. In the event of an accident, you will not be able to hold it, even if you yourself are wearing your seatbelt.
If your vehicle has been involved in an accident, replace the child seat and check the seat belts and ISOFIX anchorages.
Lead by example by fastening your seat belt and teach your child:
- correctly fasten the seat belt;
- get in and out of the car from the side opposite to the movement.
Do not use a second hand child seat or without an instruction manual.
Make sure that no foreign object near the child seat interferes with its installation.
Never leave a child alone in a car.
Always make sure your child is buckled up and that the special child seat belts or their seat belt are properly adjusted and fitted. Never dress your child in clothes that are too bulky, because of this, the belts do not fit snugly against the body.
Don't let your child stick their head or arms out the window.
Make sure that the child maintains the correct position while the car is in motion - in particular, during sleep.
Rear facing child seat
The head of a child in proportion to the body is heavier than the head of an adult, so his neck is very fragile. Keep your child in this position for as long as possible (not less than 2 years). This position allows you to support the head and neck of the child.
Select a wrap-around seat for better side protection, replace as soon as the child's head is larger than the basket.
Forward facing child seats
The head and abdomen of children should be protected first. A forward facing child seat, well secured in the vehicle, reduces the risk of head injury. Carry your child in a forward facing seat with a child restraint or shield as soon as they are tall enough. Select a wraparound seat for better side protection.
Special pillows
A child, if his weight exceeds 15 kg or if he is older than 4 years, can be transported on a special pillow that allows you to adjust the seat belt to your body type. The special seat cushion must have guides that place the seat belt on the child's hips and not on the stomach. It is best to use a height-adjustable seat with a seat belt guide that allows you to position the seat belt in the middle of your shoulder. The seat belt must never be worn around the neck or arm. Choose a wraparound seat for better side protection.
There are two child seat anchoring systems: the seat belt or the ISOFIX system.
Seat belt attachment
The seat belt must be properly adjusted so that it will work in the event of sudden braking or impact.
Observe the belt lines specified by the child seat manufacturer.
Always check that the seat belt is fastened by pulling on it, then tighten it as much as possible while holding on to the child seat.
Check the stability of the seat by moving left/right and forward/backward: the seat must be well fixed.
Make sure the child seat is not installed sideways or resting on the glass.
Do not use a child seat that can unlock the seat belt holding it: the seat base must not rest on the belt buckle and/or seat belt buckle.
The seat belt must never be loose or twisted.
Never pass the belt under your arm or behind your back.
Make sure the seat belt is not damaged by sharp edges. If the seat belt does not work properly, it will not be able to protect the child. Contact the manufacturer's service station. Do not use this place until you have repaired the seat belt.
Fixation with ISOFIX system
An approved ISOFIX child seat is certified under ECE-R44 in the following three cases:
- universal ISOFIX 3-point, in the direction of travel;
- semi-universal ISOFIX 2-point;
- special.
Before installing the last two types of seats, make sure that this is possible by examining the list of cars on which their installation is allowed.
Secure the child seat with ISOFIX locks, if equipped. The ISOFIX system ensures fast, easy and secure installation.
The ISOFIX system consists of 2 rings and in some cases there is a third ring.
It is strictly forbidden to make any changes to the design of the elements of the standard system: seat belts, ISOFIX systems, seats and their fastenings.
Before using an ISOFIX child seat purchased for another vehicle, make sure it is approved. Contact your original equipment manufacturer for a list of vehicles that can fit this seat.
To access hook 3 from the rear seat, unlock the car's rear seat backrest (see section «Rear seat: functionality», Chapter 1), pass the belt through, then lock the backrest: make sure it is securely fixed.
Hook the belt hook in ring 3 and tension the belt so that the back of the child seat rests against the back of the vehicle seat.
Two rings 1 are located between the backrest and the seat cushion and are marked with a marking.
To make it easier to install and lock your child seat in the rings 1, use the access rails 2 of the child seat.
The third ring is used to secure the top strap on some child seats.
ISOFIX anchorages are designed exclusively for child seats with the ISOFIX anchorage system. Do not use these anchors to secure other child seats, seat belts, or other items.
Make sure that there are no foreign objects in the attachment points.
If your vehicle has been involved in an accident, check the ISOFIX anchorages and replace the child seat.
Installing a child seat
Child seats are not permitted on all passenger seats. The diagram on the next page shows where the child seat can be installed.
The specified types of child seats may not be available. Before using another child seat, contact the manufacturer to see if it can be installed.
Install the child seat in the back seat of the car.
Make sure that when installing the child seat in the car, it will not come loose from the locking surface.
If it is necessary to remove the head restraint, make sure it is tucked away in a safe place so that it will not become projectile under heavy braking or impact.
Secure the child seat securely, even when you are not using it, so that it does not become a projectile in the event of sudden braking or impact.
On the front seat
Carrying a child in the front passenger seat has its own characteristics for each country. Check with applicable law and follow the diagram on the next page.
Before installing a child seat on the front passenger seat (if allowed):
- lower the seat belt as far as possible;
- move the seat back as far as it will go;
- tilt the seat back slightly from the vertical (about 25°);
- if the vehicle is equipped with this system, raise the seat cushion as far as it will go.
After installing the child seat, do not change the adjustments made.
DEATH OR RISK OF SERIOUS INJURY: Before installing a child seat in the front seat of your vehicle, ensure that your vehicle does not have a front passenger airbag.
On the back side
The cradle is installed across the car and occupies at least two places. Lay the child with his head in the opposite direction from the door. Move the front seat of the vehicle as far forward as possible to install the rearward facing child seat, then move the seat back (-I), located (th) in front of him in accordance with the instructions for the child seat.
To ensure the safety of a child traveling in a child seat in the direction of travel, do not move the front seat further than the middle of the travel of the sled, do not tilt its back too much (25°maximum) and lift it up as high as you can.
Make sure that the child seat in the direction of travel rests on the back of the vehicle seat and that the vehicle's head restraint does not interfere with this.
CHILD SAFETY: installing a child seat (2/5) No front passenger airbag.
