Note. The speedometer drive is located on the right side of the transmission, just above the drive shaft. On some late models, where the cable is attached to the transmission with a plastic retainer instead of the traditional bracket, it is not possible to remove the drive.
Removing
1. Disconnect the left drive shaft from the transmission (contact the head Drive shafts). Note that it is not necessary to separate the drive shaft from the hub, it is possible to remove the inner end of the shaft from the differential gear slots, bringing the hub/shaft assembly out.
Note. Do not let the shaft hang under its own weight, this may damage the CV joints / their boots.
2. Remove the circlip and thrust washer, then remove the left side gear from the differential.
3. Turn the differential so that the axis of the satellites is vertical (refer to accompanying illustration).
4. Remove the bracket and separate the vehicle speed sensor from the transmission wall (refer to accompanying illustration).
5. Using elongated pliers, remove the speedometer drive shaft.
6. Using the same pliers, remove the driven gear from the differential, being careful not to drop it.
7. Inspect the gear for damage and signs of wear. Replace it if necessary. If the driven gear is worn or damaged, also inspect the drive gear in the differential. To replace the drive gear, you need to disassemble the transmission. This work should be entrusted to a Renault workshop.
Installation
1. Using long nose pliers, place the driven gear into position.
2. Install the drive shaft, orienting it correctly in relation to the notches on the gear (refer to accompanying illustration).
3. Install the vehicle speed sensor and attach it with the bracket.
4. Insert differential side gear, then install thrust washer and circlip.
5. Insert the left drive shaft into the transmission (contact the head Drive shafts).
