Examination
1. The reversing light circuit is closed by a plunger-type switch screwed into the left side of the transmission case near the drive shaft. If the circuit is faulty, check for a blown fuse.
2. Disconnect the electrical connector and, using a multimeter (in resistance measurement mode) or diagnostic circuit (lamp and battery connected by wires), make sure that current flows between the switch terminals only when reverse is selected. If this is not the case and there is no open in the circuit, the switch is defective and must be replaced.
Removing
1. Apply the handbrake, then jack up the front of the vehicle and place it on axle stands.
2. Where available, remove the engine bottom shield.
3. Disconnect the electrical connector, then unscrew the switch from the transmission along with the sealing washer.
Installation
1. Install a new sealing washer on the switch, then screw it into the transmission case and tighten securely. Connect the wiring connector and check the operation of the circuit. Install the engine shield and lower the vehicle to the ground. If oil leaked out when the switch was removed, check the oil level.
