Replacing the steering gear protective cover (Renault Megane 1)

1. Remove the tie rod end ball joint as described in Section Removal and installation the steering rod end.

2. Mark the location of the protective boot on the tie rod. Release the clamps and separate the protective boot from the steering gear housing and tie rod end.

3. Thoroughly clean the steering rod and steering gear housing using fine-grained emery cloth. Remove any corrosion, burrs or irregularities that could damage the sealing lips of the new protective boot during installation.

4. Remove the grease from the old boot. If it is not contaminated with sand, apply it to the inner ball joint of the steering rod. Otherwise, apply fresh molybdenum grease.

5. Lubricate the inside of the new boot. Carefully place the boot over the tie rod and install it onto the steering gear housing. Align the outer edge of the boot with the mark made on the tie rod before removal, then secure it with new clamps.

6. Install the steering tie rod ball joint as described in Section Removal and installation the steering rod end.
