Note: Starter removal and installation procedures vary by model. The following instructions are given in general terms.
1. On all models, disconnect the battery and disconnect the cable from the back of the traction relay switch on top of the starter.
2. Depending on the design of the vehicle or engine, either mount the front of the vehicle on axle stands or work from the side of the engine compartment. You can immediately determine how best to get to the unit.
3. On models with a 4-cylinder engine, unscrew the bolts of the rear support and the bolts of the clutch housing. Remove the starter from the flywheel or torque converter housing.
4. When installing, first tighten the three bolts in the clutch housing and then secure the rear support to the cylinder block and starter.
4. The turbocharged diesel engine starter is only fixed with three bolts. Install in reverse order.
5. Removing the starter from a V6 engine requires the removal of the oil filter to allow room for removal. Three bolts are used for this, one of which is shorter and must therefore be marked accordingly. A metal shield is installed between the starter and the clutch housing. The shield is guided by a locating sleeve in the clutch housing.
