Note: The starter removal and installation procedures vary depending on the model. The following instructions are general.
1. On all models, disconnect the battery and disconnect the cable from the back of the solenoid switch on the top of the starter.
2. Depending on the design of the car or engine, either install the front of the car on axle stands or work from the engine compartment. You can immediately determine the best way to get to the unit.
3. On 4-cylinder models, remove the rear mount bolts and clutch housing bolts. Remove the starter from the flywheel or torque converter housing.
4. When installing, first tighten the three bolts in the clutch housing and then secure the rear support to the cylinder block and starter.
4. The turbocharged diesel engine starter is secured with only three bolts. Install in the reverse order.
5. Removing the starter from a V6 engine requires removing the oil filter to provide clearance for removal. This requires three bolts, one of which is shorter and must be marked accordingly. A metal shield is installed between the starter and the clutch housing. The shield is guided by a mounting sleeve in the clutch housing.
