2. Disconnect the battery.
3. Disconnect the wire from the terminal at the rear of the generator.
4. Loosen the alternator mounting bolts. On early models, loosen the tensioner bolt on the underside of the vehicle near the engine mount (place the car on axle stands). For later vehicles, loosen bolts (1) and (2). Loosen the tension bolt (3), which will release the belt to remove it (see illustrations).

5. Completely unscrew the mounting bolts and remove the generator as described above.
6. Install the generator in the reverse order. Adjust the drive belt tension as described earlier.
