A Renault 19 diesel engine that has been operated in favorable conditions and has a high mileage can start normally even at low temperatures. This depends on the degree of wear of the cylinder working surface in the area of the dead center of the first piston ring. The cylinder surface in this place acquires a deep groove in the area around the piston ring, which reduces the compression in the combustion chamber when starting the engine. The air in the combustion chamber does not heat up to the required temperature during the compression stroke. This leads to the fact that the injected diesel fuel does not ignite, despite the fact that the preheating device works normally. In this case, the diesel can be started by towing. If the owner of a Renault 19 diesel does not want to use a towing service every time the temperature drops sharply, then it is necessary to carry out the appropriate repairs.
