Disassembled Paris-Rhone starter
1 - magnetic switch with starting plug; 2 - case of a magnetic switch with a winding; 3 - bearing cap on the drive side; 4 - drive mechanism of a small gear with a freewheel mechanism; 5 - anchor with a collector; 6 - housing with excitation winding; 7 - threaded connecting rod; 8 - brush holder; 9 - cover from the side of the collector; 10 - safety cap; 11 - details of adjusting the clearance of the axial bearing.
Before each start of the engine with the ignition key turned, the starter is first activated, which «revives» engine. You will find out how much effort this requires if you try to turn the engine by hand in order to set, for example, the valves in the desired position.
Device
Renault 19 engines are equipped with a starter with forced single-stage engagement and self-disengagement of the gear, which, depending on the type of engine, is additionally equipped with a gearbox to increase torque. If there are mechanical noises that indicate heavy wear, the gearbox must be replaced. At the same time, there are probably a lot of worn parts in the starter itself, so changing the entire starter will not be redundant.
Bosch or Paris-Rhone starters are installed depending on the type of engine and equipment variant:
Starter manufacturer | Type (marking) | Torque (Nm) * | Current strength (A) * |
Bosch Bosch Paris-Rhone Paris-Rhone | 0001 110026 9000333 117 D9E 771 J9E 138 | 34 11 8 8 | 1000 350 460 450 |
* When the starter gear is locked.
When the key is turned in the ignition switch in the direction «start» the following happens:
1. Terminal «B 2» (white wire) in the ignition lock supplies voltage to the magnetic switch located on the starter.
2. As a result, the starting fork moves the starter gear along the steep threads of the armature shaft to the toothed rim of the engine flywheel.
3. When the small gear is engaged, the magnetic switch supplies current directly from the battery through the main contacts (black cable); while the starter turns the engine.
4. As soon as the engine starts and the ignition key is released, the magnetic field in the magnetic switch winding is broken.
5. As a result, the starting fork is pulled back to its original position by the spring, and the small gear moves away from the flywheel and at the same time the supply of the starter with electric current is interrupted.
