Before each engine start, the starter starts working by turning the ignition key, which "revives" the engine. You will find out how much effort is required if you try to turn the engine by hand, for example, to set the valves to the desired position.

Renault 19 engines are equipped with a starter with forced single-stage engagement and self-disengagement of the gear, which, depending on the engine type, is additionally equipped with a gearbox to increase torque. If there are mechanical noises that indicate severe wear, the gearbox must be replaced. At the same time, the starter itself probably has many worn parts, so replacing the entire starter will not be unnecessary.
Depending on the engine type and equipment option, Bosch or Paris-Rhone starters are installed:

When you turn the key in the ignition switch in the "start" direction, the following occurs:
1. Terminal "B 2" (white wire) in the ignition switch supplies voltage to the magnetic switch located on the starter.
2. As a result, the starting fork moves the starter gear along the steep thread of the anchor shaft to the toothed rim of the engine flywheel.
3. When the small gear is engaged, the magnetic switch supplies current directly from the battery through the main contacts (black cable); at the same time, the starter rotates the engine.
4. As soon as the engine starts and the ignition key is released, the magnetic field in the magnetic switch winding is disrupted.
5. As a result, the starting fork is pulled back by the spring to its original position, and the small gear moves away from the flywheel and at the same time the supply of electric current to the starter is interrupted.
