Our table will not always be able to help you eliminate starter malfunctions. But you always have the opportunity to start the Renault 19 engine (with manual transmission), by asking someone to push the car or by towing it with another car, as described in the chapter Battery.

A. When you turn the ignition key to the engine start position, the starter either does not turn at all or turns slowly.
1. The indicator lights are dim or go out.
a) the battery is discharged;
b) the wire connections are loose or oxidized;
c) there is a short circuit to the body in the starter.
2. The indicator lights are bright and the starter clicks can be heard.

a) the carbon brushes or their fastenings in the starter have become loose;
b) the contacts of the magnetic switch are burnt;
c) the starter winding is damaged4.
3. The control lamps are brightly lit, no sounds are heard.
a) the connection of terminal B2 of the magnetic switch has become loose;
b) the wire of terminal B2 from the ignition switch to the magnetic switch is broken.

get a jump start from another car.
Check the wire connections.

Repair the starter.
Tap the magnetic switch. If the starter still does not work:
Check the carbon brushes.
Replace the magnetic switch.

Repair the starter.

Check the connection.
Check the wire with a test lamp.

B.The starter works, but does not turn the engine. 1. The starter gear is dirty.
2. The starting fork device is jammed.
3. The starter gear teeth or flywheel ring gear are damaged.
Clean the gear.
Repair the starter.
With the gear engaged, push the car forward a little. Try to start the engine again. Replace damaged parts.
C.The magnetic switch turns off and on quickly, the starter does not turn. The battery is very low, when the magnetic switch is turned on, the voltage drops and it turns off. Charge the battery.
D.The starter continues to operate even though the ignition key is released.

1. The magnetic switch does not turn off.
2. The starter switch in the ignition switch is faulty.

Immediately turn off the ignition, if necessary, disconnect the battery. Replace the magnetic switch.

Replace the starter switch in the ignition switch.

E. The starter gear does not move after the engine starts. 1. The return spring of the starting fork is weak or broken.
2. See B3.
Turn off the ignition immediately and replace the part.
