Below are tips and recommendations on how to properly handle a car, make minor repairs on the road. In case of serious breakdowns, we recommend contacting the RENAULT service center.

When the starter is turned on

The indicator lights on the instrument panel do not light up, the starter does not turn on.

Reasons:
  • one of the battery wires has become disconnected or the battery terminals and posts are heavily oxidized;
  • the battery is discharged;
  • the battery is out of order.

Methods of elimination:
  • check the reliability of the terminal contacts: if they are oxidized, clean them and tighten them;
  • charge the battery;
  • replace the battery.

The indicator lights on the instrument panel are dim, the starter turns the crankshaft very slowly.

Reasons:
  • oxidation of battery terminals;
  • the battery is discharged.

Methods of elimination:
  • check the reliability of the terminal contacts: if they are oxidized, clean them and tighten them;
  • charge the battery.

Starting the engine is difficult in high humidity conditions or after washing the car.

Starting a warmed-up car is difficult.

Reasons:
  • ignition system malfunction: ignition system components are damp;
  • deterioration of fuel supply (bubbles and gas in the fuel system);
  • insufficient compression in the engine cylinders.

Methods of elimination:
  • dry the spark plug wires and ignition coil;
  • let the engine cool down;
  • contact a RENAULT service station.

The engine "sneezes" but does not start or starts with difficulty.

Reasons:
  • engine start blocking by electric engine blocking system;
  • erroneous actions when starting the engine;
  • insufficient fuel supply;
  • malfunction in the ignition system;
  • as a result of the strong impact, the fuel supply cut-off system was activated.

Methods of elimination:
  • see relevant sections;
  • if the engine does not start after several attempts, contact a RENAULT service station.

In motion:

Vibration

Reasons:
  • insufficient air pressure in tires;
  • incorrect wheel locking;
  • their damage.

Methods of elimination:
  • check the air pressure in the tires, if it is normal, contact a RENAULT service station.

Boiling of coolant in the expansion tank

Reasons:
  • mechanical damage: broken cylinder head gasket, water pump malfunction;
  • malfunction of the cooling system fan motor.

Methods of elimination:
  • check the corresponding fuse, if it is OK, contact a RENAULT service station.

White smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe

Reasons:
  • mechanical failure: cylinder head gasket is blown;
  • stop the engine, contact a RENAULT station.

There is smoke coming from under the hood

Reasons:
  • short circuit;
  • engine cooling system malfunction.

Methods of elimination:
  • stop, turn off the ignition, disconnect the battery, and contact a RENAULT service station.

Oil pressure warning light is on:
  • when turning or braking the car;
  • at engine idle;
  • the light goes out slowly or stays on when the car accelerates.

Reasons:
  • oil level too low;
  • low oil pressure;
  • lack of pressure in the lubrication system.

Methods of elimination:
  • top up the engine oil to the normal level. Contact a RENAULT service station.

The engine does not develop full power

Reasons:
  • the air filter is clogged;
  • fuel system malfunction;
  • faulty, poorly adjusted spark plugs.

Methods of elimination:
  • replace the filter element;
  • check the fuel level;
  • contact a RENAULT service station.

Engine idles erratically or stalls

Reasons:
  • insufficient compression in the cylinders (faulty spark plugs, ignition system, air leak).

Methods of elimination:
  • contact a RENAULT service station.

Power steering is difficult

Reasons:
  • drive belt break;
  • lack of oil in the power steering pump.

Methods of elimination:
  • replace the drive belt;
  • add oil to the power steering reservoir to the normal level. If the belt still sticks, contact a RENAULT service station.

Engine overheating. Coolant temperature warning light on (or the pointer arrow is in the red zone of the scale)

Reasons:
  • loose or broken pump drive belt;
  • engine cooling system fan malfunction.

Methods of elimination:
  • stop, turn off the engine and contact a RENAULT service station.

Coolant leak
  • check the condition of the hoses and the tightness of the clamps;
  • check the expansion tank: there should be coolant in it. If there is none, top it up to the normal level (after the engine has cooled down). Take precautions to avoid getting burned. For final troubleshooting, contact a RENAULT service station as soon as possible.

Electrical equipment

Windscreen wipers not working

Reasons:
  • windshield wipers frozen to glass;
  • the fuse has blown (intermittent mode, when the vehicle is stationary);
  • the windshield wiper motor is faulty.

[The text is available on this website renaultbook]

Methods of elimination:
  • release the windshield wipers before turning them on;
  • replace the fuse;
  • contact a RENAULT service station.

More frequent flashing of direction indicators and hazard warning lights

Reasons:
  • the lamp burned out.

Methods of elimination:
  • replace the lamp.

Direction indicators and hazard warning lights do not work

On one side

Reasons:
  • the lamp burned out;
  • there is no contact in the turn signal connectors or the connectors are not connected correctly;
  • poor grounding.

Methods of elimination:
  • replace the lamp;
  • restore connection;
  • find the ground wire, clean the place where it connects to the car body and restore contact.

On both sides

Cause:
  • the fuse has blown.

Methods of elimination:
  • replace the fuse.

Malfunction of the turn signal and hazard warning light switch relay.

Methods of elimination:
  • to replace the relay, contact a RENAULT service station.

The headlights are not working

One

Cause:
  • the lamp burned out.

Methods of elimination:
  • replace the lamp.

Both

Cause:
  • the fuse has blown.

Solution:
  • check and replace the fuse if necessary.

Presence of traces of condensation on the headlight reflectors

This is not evidence of a malfunction. The presence of condensation on the headlight reflectors is a natural consequence of changes in ambient temperature.

When the headlights are turned on, the condensation quickly disappears.

Heating and air conditioning system

Weak air supply.

Cause:
  • the cabin ventilation filter is clogged.

Solution:
  • replace the filter element.

Fuel cut-off in collision

Purpose

In the event of an accident, this system is designed to prevent a fire due to a fuel leak. This is achieved by stopping the fuel supply at the moment of impact by turning off the devices that supply fuel from the fuel tank. Their operation is restored mechanically by the driver or a mechanic.

Description

The system consists of an inertia switch 1, which:
  • reacts to impact;
  • breaks the electrical circuit.

breaks the electrical circuit.

Installation location:
  • on petrol engines, between contact 1 of the pump relay (236) and the +12 V power supply wire;
  • on diesel engines, between the +12V power supply wire and the shut-off solenoid valve (or a coded solenoid valve if the vehicle is equipped with an electronic engine immobilizer).

Operating principle

At the moment of impact, the ball of the inertia switch moves from its place and breaks the electrical circuit.

On petrol engines, the positive branch in the pump relay control circuit (236) is disconnected. As a result, the pump and injectors are de-energized.

As a result, the fuel in the fuel tank does not reach the engine.

On diesel engines, the +12V power wire does not supply current to the shut-off solenoid or coded solenoid.

The pump no longer pumps fuel and does not create pressure. This eliminates the possibility of a fire due to diesel fuel under high pressure entering the engine.

Restoring the working condition of the switch

To restore the working condition of the inertia switch, simply press on it from above to return the ball to its place.

Attention! On petrol engines, it is necessary to delete the fault record from the computer memory using the XR25 portable diagnostic device after bringing the switch into working condition. Since the injection computer stores data about the pump relay failure as a result of the fuel supply cut-off system operation.
