Note: A new oil pan gasket and a new oil strainer O-ring will be required during installation.
Removal
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
2. Drain the engine oil as described in Section 1.
3. To improve access, remove the hood as described in Section 11.
4. Remove the crankshaft pulley as described in Chapter 5.
5. Unscrew the mounting bolts and remove the protective cover from the clutch housing (see illustration).
12.5. Clutch housing protective cover fastening bolts (1).
6. Attach the winch and lifting device to the lifting eye on the rear right corner of the cylinder head. Raise the engine slightly.
7. Remove the right upper engine mount bracket, see Chapter 17.
8. Where available, disconnect the engine oil level sensor wiring connector.
9. Release the top of the engine oil dipstick from the bracket on the intake manifold, then remove the dipstick from the pipe.
10. Working under the vehicle, gradually loosen and remove the oil pan mounting bolts.
11. Using a winch, raise the engine/gearbox enough to allow access to the oil pan. To separate the oil pan from the cylinder block, hit the oil pan with the palm of your hand. Lower the pan and rotate it toward the rear of the vehicle to expose the oil pump pickup tube.
12. If this is not possible, lower the pan enough to access the intake pipe mounting bolts, then carefully remove the two bolts. Remove the bolts and lower the oil pump pickup tube into the pan.
13. Lower the tray and remove it from under the car. Where present, remove the gasket (please note that the tray is sealed with sealant). If not already done, the oil pump intake pipe can be unscrewed (see illustration).
12.13. Remove the oil pump intake pipe.
Installation
14. Clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder block and the oil pan from any sealant or gasket residue (where available), and wipe the surfaces dry.
15. Place the new gasket on the pan, with the flat surface facing the cylinder block.
16. Install the new O-ring, then place the pickup tube in the pan so it is ready for installation (see illustration).
12.16. Install a new O-ring on the oil pump inlet pipe.
Or, attach the tube directly if there is enough space to install the tray with the tube.
17. Place a pan under the cylinder block, then move the oil pump inlet pipe into its working position in the pan. Insert the bolts, then tighten them securely.
18. Place the pan on the cylinder block, insert the intake pipe into it, make sure that the gasket does not move, then insert the bolts. Tighten the bolts gradually in a diagonal sequence to the torque specified in the Specifications.
19. Install the dipstick and, where available, connect the electrical connector to the oil level sensor.
20. Install the right upper engine mount bracket as described in Chapter 17.
21. Disconnect the lifting device.
22. Install the clutch housing protective cover and tighten the mounting bolts.
23. Install the crankshaft pulley and tighten the bolt to the specified tightening torque Specifications, see Chapter 5.
24. Install the hood as described in Section 11.
25. Fill the engine with oil as described in Section 1, then connect the negative cable to the battery.
