2. Note the installation depth of the oil seal, then remove it with a screwdriver, without damaging the surface of the camshaft.
3. Inspect the contact surface with the oil seal on the camshaft. If it is rough or grooved in the area where the old seal was in contact, the new seal should be installed at a slightly shallower depth so that it rubs against an unworn surface.
4. Wipe the contact surface with the seal, then dip the new seal in oil and put it on the end of the camshaft with the closed side outward (see illustration).
9.4. Position the oil seal on the camshaft...
Do not damage the sealing lip of the oil seal when installing it.
5. Using a metal tube (or a large nest), drive the seal to the depth marked before removing the old one, or to a lesser depth if there is a wear groove on the camshaft (see illustration).
9.5. ...then hammer it into place using a large socket or pipe.
6. Install the camshaft sprocket as described in Chapter 8.
