Engine oil change (10,000 km) (Renault Symbol 2)

The oil is changed on an inspection pit, overpass or lift. In all cases, the car must be installed horizontally. Pre-warm the oil to operating temperature (80–90°C) by making a short run or idling. For work, you need to prepare:

• key for unscrewing the drain plug;
• 5L waste oil collection container;
• new oil filter;
• motor oil of the proper grade;
• device for unscrewing oil filters;
• clean rags.

Replace the oil in the following order:

• place the vehicle in the work area and stop the engine;
• remove the protective tray from the bottom of the engine compartment;
• place a container under the drain plug at the bottom of the engine to collect the drained oil;
• remove the plug from the engine oil filler neck;

• carefully unscrew the drain plug (Figure 2.28), pressing it against the crankcase, and quickly remove it so that oil does not get on your hands; wait until the oil is completely drained;
• wipe the drain plug dry, inspect its threads and the condition of the sealing washer. Replace the washer if necessary;
• wipe the surface around the drain hole and install the plug with the washer, tightening it to the specified torque;
• check the cleanliness of the drained oil - the condition of the oil can be used to assess the condition of the engine and its wear.

Replace the oil filter in the following order:

• using the tool, unscrew the filter (Figure 2.29), placing a container underneath it to drain the oil;
• wipe off any oil and dirt from the sealing surface under the filter on the cylinder block with a clean rag and screw on the new filter by hand, after having lubricated its rubber gasket with engine oil;
• tighten the filter by hand without using any tools;
• remove the container with the drained oil from under the car;
• install a protective tray at the bottom of the engine compartment.

Fill the lubrication system in the following order:

• pour new oil through the filler neck in small portions, constantly checking its level in the engine oil pan with a dipstick, up to the "MAX" mark;
• close the filler cap and let the engine idle for 5-7 seconds until the oil pressure warning light in the instrument cluster goes out;
• stop the engine and after 5 minutes measure the oil level with the dipstick;
• add oil up to the "MAX" mark;
• take a test drive and check for oil leaks around the oil filter and oil pan drain plug, carefully tighten the connections if necessary;
• keep the tag indicating the oil brand and viscosity, which will help when adding oil during operation.

Always use oils of the same type and brand. It is permissible to use oils of the same type but different viscosity during transition periods of the season.
