Be sure to replace the camshaft nuts during this operation.
Setting the valve timing
Attention! Be sure to degrease the nose and crankshaft sprocket bore. bearing surfaces of the crankshaft pulley, as well as the ends of the camshafts (from the timing drive) and holes in the camshaft pulleys. to avoid slipping of the toothed belt between the crankshaft sprocket and the camshaft pulleys. which may result in engine failure.
Position the camshaft bores as shown in the illustration below, tightening the two old camshaft sprocket sprockets onto the camshaft end studs respectively.
Lock tool Mot. 1496 at the ends of the camshafts.
Install the camshaft pulleys by first tightening the new nuts (do not tighten the nuts completely, the gap between the nut and the toothed pulley should be 0.5-1 mm).
Make sure the crankshaft is securely locked with the TDC lock (groove 5 of the crankshaft must point upwards).
When replacing the timing belt, be sure to replace the timing idler and bypass rollers.
Make sure that the protrusion of the roller fits into groove A properly.
Place the RENAULT emblem engraved on the camshaft pulleys vertically upwards A, fit the timing belt onto the camshaft pulleys, then fit the camshaft pulley locking tool Mot. 1490 (use the timing cover sprinklings to secure tool Mot. 1490).
Install the idler by tightening the sprinkling bolt with tool Mot. 1368 torque 45 mm.
Install the crankshaft pulley after tightening the bolt (do not tighten the bolt completely, the gap between the bolt and the pulley should be 2-3 mm).
Belt tension
Make sure that the gap between the nuts and the camshaft pulleys has not changed and is 0.5-1 mm.
Move the movable pointer (A1) tension roller 7-6 mm in relation to the fixed pointer 7 using a 6 mm hex wrench (hole B).
Note. Position A corresponds to the initial position of the movable pointer.
Pre-tighten the sprinkling nut of the tension roller axle to a torque of 7 Nm.
Remove the Met camshaft pulley locking tool. 1490.
Rotate the front end of the timing gear six turns at the exhaust camshaft sprocket using tool Mot. 799-01.
Loosen the idler axle nut no more than one turn while holding the cast with a 6mm hex wrench.
Align the movable pointer A with the fixed pointer 7 and finally tighten the nut to 27 Nm.
Remove the crankshaft pulley so that the lower timing case can be installed (without fixing screws), then reinstall the crankshaft pulley.
Note. The crankshaft pulley bolt is reusable if the length to the head does not exceed 49.1 mi (otherwise replace the bolt).
But lubricate the new bolt with engine oil. On the contrary, a reused bolt must always be lubricated with engine oil.
Fit the camshaft pulley locking tool Mot. 1490, using tool Mot. 799-01.
Make sure the crankshaft is securely locked with lock Mot. 1489.
Tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt to 2 Nm, then tighten 135°±15° (while the crankshaft must be locked with a top dead center lock).
Tighten the exhaust camshaft sprocket nut to 30 Nm, then tighten 84°.
Remove tool Mot. 1496 for fixing camshafts, tool Mot. 1490 for fixing the camshaft pulleys and TDC lock Mot. 1489.
Checking the tension of the timing belt
Rotate the crankshaft two turns clockwise (viewed from the timing side), before turning, screw in lock Mot. 1489 into the cylinder block and slowly move the crankshaft without jerks to the stop position on the lock.
Remove the top dead center pin.
Make sure that the tension roller pointers are aligned, otherwise repeat the tensioning procedure. Loosen the idler pulley nut no more than one turn while holding the idler pulley with a 6mm hex wrench.
Align the movable pointer with the fixed pointer and tighten the nut to 2.7 Nm.
Checking the installation of the valve timing
Breeds by checking the installation of the valve timing, make sure that the tension roller pointers are in the correct position.
Screw in retainer Mot. 1489 into the cylinder block, then turn the crankshaft until it rests on the retainer.
Install (without making any effort) tool Mot 1498 for fixing the camshaft pulleys (the grooves of the camshafts must be in a horizontal position).
If the tool cannot be installed, reinstall the timing and adjust the timing belt tension.
