Removal and installation of glow plugs
Removing glow plugs
1. Remove the engine cover.
2. Remove the turbocharger outlet pipe.
3. Unhook the protective cover of the fuel rail from the clips (1).
4. Loosen the bolt (2) fuel rail cover.
5. Remove the protective cover of the fuel rail.
6. Disconnect connectors (3) from glow plugs.
Attention: When performing the following operation, use goggles with side protection.
7. Use compressed air to clean the outer surfaces around the glow plugs to prevent any contaminants from entering the engine cylinders.
8. Loosen glow plugs (4) using a 10 mm long cardan socket or a special glow plug wrench.
Note: If the glow plugs are stuck, use a special tool kit to remove them (part number 77 11 420 611), by following the instructions supplied with the tool kit by the manufacturer.
9. Using a hose, completely unscrew the glow plugs from the engine.
Installing glow plugs
1. Using a hose, insert and screw on the glow plugs.
2. Tighten the glow plugs using a 10 mm long socket with a cardan or a special glow plug wrench to 15 Nm.
3. Connect connectors to glow plugs.
4. Install the protective cover of the fuel rail.
5. Hook the clips of the protective cover of the fuel rail.
6. Install the turbocharger air duct.
7. Install the engine cover.
