2.3 Location of the number on the engine type "J". The picture shows a gasoline engine, but the diesel engine number is also located under the exhaust manifold
2.4 Location of the number on the V6 engine
The car's markings were modified in the second generation models. In early models, the rectangular nameplate is located in the engine compartment on the wheel well on the right. In addition, an oval data plate is included (see illustration 2.1).
The nameplates contain various letter and number designations; some of them are particularly important. This applies above all to the chassis number. The rectangular plates of both models indicate values that must not be exceeded, such as the permissible gross vehicle weight, gross vehicle weight with trailer, permissible loads on the front and rear axles, for vehicles of this type. Both oval plates indicate the manufacturer's data, i.e. the vehicle type (starting with either J11 or J63), vehicle equipment and manufacturer.
The engine number installed on the vehicle is especially important when replacing the engine. For group "J" engines (petrol and diesel) the number is on the side of the oil filter under the exhaust manifold (see illustration 2.3). For the "Z" (V6) engine, the engine number is located on the upper end of the engine oil dipstick (see illustration 2.4). Both engine number plates have two lines of data. The top line indicates the engine type; the bottom line indicates the engine number. The other data on this plate is of no particular significance as they refer to French registration numbers.
These letter and number codes must always be indicated when replacing parts. They must always be written down and taken with you when buying spare parts. This will help you avoid installing unsuitable parts. It is important to know that the engines installed on the Espace are also equipped with other Renault models, but it is always necessary to provide the final letters of the engine number when buying and replacing parts. For example, the engine "7JR" - with 12 valves or "J7T" - a turbocharged engine are not installed on the Espace.
