2.3 Number location on engine type «J». The picture shows a petrol engine, but the diesel engine number is also under the exhaust manifold
2.4 Location of the number on the V6 engine
The marking of the car was modified for the second generation models. On early models, the rectangular nameplate is located in the engine compartment on the wheel arch on the right. Also included is an oval data plate (see illustration 2.1).
Nameplates contain various letter and number designations; some of them are especially important. This applies primarily to the chassis number. The rectangular plates of both models indicate the values that must not be exceeded, for example, the permissible gross vehicle weight, gross weight with trailer, permissible front and rear axle loads, for vehicles of this type. Both oval plates bear the manufacturer's data, i.e. car type (starting with either J11 or J63), vehicle equipment and manufacturer.
The number of the engine installed on the car is especially important when replacing the engine. Group engines «J» (petrol and diesel) the number is on the side of the oil filter under the exhaust manifold (see illustration 2.3). Do engine type «Z» (V6) the engine number is located on the top end of the engine oil dipstick (see illustration 2.4). Both engine number plates have two data lines. The top line indicates the engine type; the bottom line indicates the engine number. The other details on this plate are of no particular importance as they refer to French registration numbers.
These alpha and numeric codes must always be specified when replacing parts. They should always be written down and taken with you when purchasing spare parts. This will help you avoid installing unsuitable parts. It is necessary to know that the engines installed on the Espace are also equipped with other Renault models, however, it is necessary to always indicate the final letters of the engine number when purchasing and replacing parts. For example an engine «7JR» - with 12 valves or «J7T» - The turbocharged engine is not fitted to the Espace.
