The sensor in the fuel tank consists of a float and an electrical resistance. The electrical circuit is closed by a variable resistance in the sensor, which is connected to ground.

Depending on the current strength, the bimetal in the indicator heats up more or less, and, accordingly, the position of the arrow fixed to it changes. If the float is in the highest position when the tank is full, then there is no resistance in the sensor, the bimetal of the indicator heats up completely, and the arrow, accordingly, shows that the tank is full.

As the amount of fuel in the tank decreases, the float drops, the resistance in the sensor increases, the bimetal heats up less, and the indicator arrow shows a lower value.

Possible malfunctions

  • Readings too high or too low: the voltage in the vehicle's electrical system is too high or too low, or the float is jammed.
  • No readings: no electrical current or faulty sensor or indicator.

Checking the fuel level

The low fuel indicator light comes on when the amount of fuel in the tank is less than 7 liters. The indicator light comes on by a switch located in the fuel level sensor and is activated by a float. When turning sharply, the low fuel indicator light may come on temporarily, even if the remaining fuel in the tank is more than 7 liters.

Troubleshooting

1. Check whether the cause of incorrect readings from the fuel level sensor and other indicators is a faulty generator voltage regulator.

2. If the readings are incorrect due to a jammed float, remove the fuel level sensor.

3. Check the fuel level sensor: remove the connecting wire.

4. Connect the additional wire to the purple wire connector and connect directly to ground.

5. If the fuel level indicator arrow shows "full tank", then the fuel level sensor in the tank is faulty.

6. Check the indicator: remove the combination instrument and disconnect the connector.

7. Connect the contact tongue for the black wire to the negative pole of the 12V battery, the contact tongue for the orange cable to the positive pole of the battery - if the arrow does not move, then the device is faulty.

8. If the arrow shows the maximum value, then the wiring is faulty.
