The layout of the elements of the system is shown in fig. 2.12. Operation of airbags and belt pretensioners is shown in fig. 2.13 and 2.14.
Attention! Work on the airbag and seat belt pretensioner systems should only be carried out by experienced and trained personnel. On vehicles with side airbags, front seat covers should not be used (with the exception of special covers from the company's accessories store). Do not place foreign objects in the airbag deployment area.
After the operation of any passive safety device, it is imperative to contact a specialized service station to restore the system.
Operation of airbags and seat belt pretensioners
When the ignition is switched on, the airbag and seat belt pretensioner warning light comes on for a few seconds and then goes out.
Note. The airbag warning light may also come on when the battery voltage drops.
The ECU and side impact sensors respond to vehicle deceleration using signals measured by the electronic negative acceleration sensors.
For frontal impact:
- after a sufficiently severe frontal impact is confirmed by the electronic safety sensor, the pyrotechnic gas generators of the front seat belt pretensioners and pyrotechnic coils are simultaneously ignited;
- in case of a very strong frontal impact, the ECU includes, in addition to pretensioners and coils, the ignition of pyrotechnic generators of small volume front airbags;
- in an even more severe frontal impact, the safety ECU ignites the pyrotechnic gas generators of the pretensioners, coils and high-volume front airbags.
Note. The volume to which the front airbags inflate is controlled by the computer, taking into account the force of the impact and the position of the driver's seat.
In the event of a sufficiently strong side impact, the impact sensors send a signal to the ECU. After confirmation of the recognition of the impact by the electronic safety sensor built into the computer, the pyrotechnic generators are ignited:
- front seat belt pretensioners and rear pyrotechnic reel (from the side of impact);
- front seat, while the side airbag is inflated to protect the head and chest (from the side of impact).
Note. Front pretensioners and rear pyrotechnic coils can be activated in a rear impact (depending on his strength). When the pyrotechnic gas generator is activated, a pop is heard and a little smoke is emitted.
The power supply of the computer and igniters under normal operating conditions is carried out from the vehicle's battery.
The ECU is equipped with a backup power supply in case of battery failure in the initial phase of the impact.
The instrument cluster of the car includes two signal lamps:
- airbag malfunctions;
- front passenger airbags blocked («Airbad OFF»).
Both signal lamps must not be lit at the same time.
The airbag malfunction warning light informs about malfunctions in the safety system: ECU, front pretensioners, front airbags, side airbags, key lock system, battery (supply voltage check).
When the ignition is switched on, the signal lamp should light up for a few seconds and then go out (and don't light up again).
If the lamp does not light up when the ignition is turned on or lights up while the car is moving, then the system is faulty.
Note. In some cases, when starting the engine, the warning light may come on for a short period of time and then turn off.
signal lamp «Airbad OFF» allows you to get information about the activation or deactivation of the front passenger's airbags.
Passenger front airbag lock key
The lock key located on the door switch panel has two positions:
- «ON» - operating position of the front passenger airbags;
- «OFF» - Passenger's front airbag is locked to install a child seat. In this position of the switch-off key, the signal lamp lights up in the instrument cluster «Airbad OFF».
