Removing
1. Block the rear wheels, engage the handbrake, then jack up the front of the vehicle and place it on axle stands. Remove the wheel.
2. Remove the mounting bolt and separate the wiring/brake hose bracket from the strut base (refer to accompanying illustration).
3. Remove the nuts and washers from the bolts securing the steering knuckle to the suspension strut, remembering that the nuts are placed on the rear side of the strut. Remove the bolts and support the steering knuckle assembly (refer to accompanying illustration).
4. Working in the engine compartment, mark the holes where the strut top mounting bolts are inserted, then have an assistant support the strut weight and remove both bolts (refer to accompanying illustration). On Scenic models, the strut mounting bolts are located under the air box panels. To access, remove both wiper arms (Chapter Onboard electrical equipment) and bulkhead seal. Loosen the screws and remove the air box panels, moving them towards the center of the windshield. Remove the rack turret sealing caps and remove the bolts as described above.
5. Separate the rack from the steering knuckle and remove it from under the wheel arch, being careful not to damage the protective cover of the drive shaft (refer to accompanying illustration).
Installation
1. Move the rack assembly into position, being careful not to damage the driveshaft boot. Position the top mounting plate so that its marked bolt holes align with those of the adjacent component, then install the bolts and tighten them to Specifications effort. The rear holes are used on vehicles with power steering and the front holes are used on models without it; rotate the mounting plate as needed (refer to accompanying illustration).
2. Insert the steering knuckle mounting bolts into the rack (car front). Install washers and nuts and tighten to Specifications effort.
3. Install the brake hose/wire bracket to the strut and securely tighten the mounting bolt.
4. On Scenic models, apply a bead of sealant to the non-seal turret caps. Install the air box panels, bulkhead seal and wiper arms.
