Removal
1. Block the rear wheels, apply the handbrake, then jack up the front of the car and place it on axle stands. Remove the wheel.

2. Loosen the mounting bolt and separate the wiring/brake hose bracket from the strut base (refer to the accompanying illustration).

3. Remove the nuts and washers from the bolts that secure the steering knuckle to the strut, remembering that the nuts are placed on the back of the strut. Remove the bolts and support the steering knuckle assembly (refer to the accompanying illustration).

4. Working in the engine compartment, mark the holes where the upper strut mount bolts are inserted, then have an assistant support the weight of the strut and remove both bolts (refer to the accompanying illustration). On Scenic models, the strut mounting bolts are located under the air intake box panels. To gain access, remove both wiper arms (Chapter On-board electrical equipment) and bulkhead seal. Loosen the screws and remove the air intake box panels, moving them toward the center of the windshield. Remove the strut tower sealing caps and loosen the bolts as described above.

5. Separate the strut from the steering knuckle and remove it from under the wheel arch, being careful not to damage the protective cover of the drive shaft (refer to the accompanying illustration).

Installation

1. Place the strut assembly in its operating position, being careful not to damage the drive shaft boot. Position the top mount plate so that its marked bolt holes line up with those of the adjacent component, then install the bolts and tighten them to the specified torque Specifications force. The rear holes are used on vehicles with power steering, and the front holes are used on models without it; rotate the mounting plate as needed (refer to the accompanying illustration).
2. Insert the steering knuckle mounting bolts into the strut (in front of the car). Install the washers and nuts and tighten them to the specified Specifications effort.
3. Install the brake hose/wire harness bracket to the strut and tighten the mounting bolt securely.
4. On Scenic models, apply a bead of sealant to the strut tower seal caps. Install the air box panels, bulkhead seal, and wiper arms.
