Tightening torques when removing and installing the timing chain
Removing
Remove the engine complete with gearbox.
Install the engine on a stand for assembly and disassembly. Drain the engine oil.
Remove the accessory drive belt.
Disconnect the wiring (1) camshaft dephaser solenoid valve.
Remove:
- bolt (2) fastening the solenoid valve of the camshaft dephaser;
- camshaft dephaser solenoid valve (3).
Install the flywheel retainer (4) drive disc to the cylinder block.
Remove the crankshaft pulley and side seal.
Remove the timing cover bolts, noting their position.
Detach the timing cover using a crankcase separator with silicone seals. (Mot. 1716) (5).
Remove the timing cover (6).
Screw the crankshaft pulley bolt with spacer into the end of the crankshaft (which should not cover the mark on the crankshaft sprocket).
Remove the flywheel retainer.
Turn the crankshaft clockwise without jerks (when viewed from the timing side), to label (7) camshaft pulleys are aligned with the marks (8) on the cylinder head cover, and check that the mark (9) on the crankshaft sprocket is in the lower vertical position.
Install the flywheel retainer.
Loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt.
Press the timing chain tensioner.
Install the metal rod (10) into the tensioner to loosen the chain.
Remove:
- timing chain tensioner bolts (11);
- timing chain tensioner (12).
Remove:
- fastening bolt (13) timing chain damper;
- timing chain damper (14).
Remove:
- bolts (15) fastening the damper of the timing chain;
- timing chain shoe (16).
Remove timing chain (17).
Preparing for installation
Clean the mating surfaces of the timing case with a solvent for the mating surfaces.
Remove residue with a plastic spatula.
Finish cleaning the mating surfaces with a matting wheel.
Use a surface cleaner to clean:
- the mating plane of the timing cover on the cylinder block and the cylinder head;
- the cover of the valve timing mechanism drive.
Parts that must be replaced:
- crankshaft pulley bolt;
- timing chain tensioner damper;
- timing chain tensioner;
- timing chain;
- crankshaft side seal;
- timing chain damper.
Installation
Check:
- to label (18) on the cylinder head cover are aligned with the marks on the toothed pulleys of the camshafts;
- so that the mark on the crankshaft sprocket (19) was directed vertically downwards.
Set the piston of the 1st cylinder to TDC.
Install the new chain, matching the timing chain marks (21) with labels on each star.
Install:
- new dampers for the timing chain;
- bolts for fastening the timing chain dampers.
Torque tighten the timing chain damper bolts 25 Nm.
Install:
- new timing chain tensioner;
- timing chain tensioner bolts.
Torque tighten the timing chain tensioner bolts 10 Nm. Removing the metal rod (28), unlock the timing chain tensioner.
Screw the old crankshaft pulley bolt with spacer into the end of the crankshaft (which should not cover the mark on the crankshaft sprocket). Remove the flywheel retainer.
Rotate the crankshaft two turns clockwise (viewed from the timing side).
Check:
- so that the marks on the camshaft sprockets are aligned with the marks on the camshaft bearing housing (29);
- so that the mark on the crankshaft sprocket is facing vertically down (30).
Lock the flywheel or drive plate with the flywheel lock. Remove the old crankshaft pulley bolt and spacer. Remove the flywheel retainer.
Apply a bead of 4mm silicone sealant around the perimeter of the timing cover (31).
Install:
- cover of the drive of the gas distribution mechanism;
- timing cover bolts.
Tighten in order to the correct torque:
- bolts for fastening the timing cover M5 7 Nm;
- bolts for fastening the timing cover Mb 25 Nm;
- bolts for fastening the timing cover M10 55Nm;
- bolts for fastening the timing cover M12 75 Nm.
Install the crankshaft oil seal on the timing side.
Lock the flywheel or drive plate with the flywheel lock. Install the pulley on the crankshaft. Remove the flywheel retainer.
Install all parts in reverse order.
