General information about electrical equipment (Renault Symbol 2)

The electrical equipment of the car is made according to a single-wire scheme. The second wire is the current-conducting elements of the body, engine, other units and devices ("ground"). The negative terminals of the power sources are connected to the "ground" (Battery and generator) and consumers. The voltage in the network is 12 V. Voltage is supplied to some consumers through the ignition switch (lock). Bypassing the ignition switch and regardless of the position of the key in it, the power supply circuits of the parking lights, interior lights, luggage compartment lights, hazard warning lights, horn, clock, cigarette lighter, radio, centralized door locking system and the electric motor of the engine cooling system fan are constantly connected to the battery.

To avoid failure of semiconductor elements of electrical equipment, follow these recommendations:

• before carrying out any maintenance or repair work on electrical equipment, be sure to disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the battery;
• do not disconnect the battery, alternator or any connectors while the engine is running;
• do not allow the engine to run with the generator disconnected from the electrical circuit;
• when performing electric welding, disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the battery;
• do not check the generator's serviceability by short-circuiting it to ground.

Sources and consumers of electrical energy installed on a vehicle are connected to each other by wires that form an on-board electrical network. The main elements of an electrical circuit are connecting wires, circuit protection devices against overloads and short circuits, and switching devices (switches and toggles), various connecting and distributing devices.
