An electric heating element is installed in the fuel filter housing, which prevents the fuel from thickening at low temperatures. The heater is controlled by a thermal switch. When the fuel temperature is below 0°C, the thermal switch contacts close and current is supplied to the heater, which heats the fuel in the filter housing and the filter itself. When the fuel warms up to 8°C, the thermal switch contacts open and the heater switches off.
Caution: Be careful not to allow dirt to enter the fuel system.
Heating element
1. Remove the fuel filter as described in Chapter Maintenance.
2. Disconnect the electrical wiring, then unscrew the center bolt and remove the heating element from the base of the fuel filter housing. Remove the sealing ring that is installed between the element and the filter housing; it is subject to replacement.
3. When installing, position the new sealing ring in the groove in the heating element and install the element into the filter housing, tightening the center bolt securely.
4. Connect the electrical wiring and install the fuel filter as described in Chapter Maintenance.
Thermal switch
1. Disconnect the electrical wiring connector from the thermal switch.
2. Wipe down the area around the thermal switch and fuel filter housing. Place a container to catch any spilled fuel, then loosen and remove the switch from the fuel filter housing. Remove the sealing washers that are located on each side of the fuel hose connector. Discard the washers - they will need to be replaced.
3. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. Be sure to install new sealing washers on each side of the fuel hose coupling.
