Removal
1. Remove the cylinder head, timing chain and camshaft sprocket.
2. Remove the distributor as described in Section 5B.
3. After screwing a suitable bolt into the distributor drive gear, remove it from the hole.
4. Remove the push rod from the top of the cylinder block and stack them in strict order. Mark the pusher to avoid confusion during installation.
5. Loosen and remove the two bolts securing the camshaft retaining plate to the cylinder block and carefully remove the camshaft from the head.
Inspection
6. Inspect the working surfaces of the camshaft bearings, cams, and helical gear for wear, corrosion, and other damage. Replace the camshaft if any damage is found.
7. If the camshaft is serviceable, temporarily install the sprocket and secure it with the bolt. Using a feeler gauge, measure the gap between the camshaft mounting plate and the outer surface of the bearing journal. If there is a gap (axial play) exceeds the size specified in the Specifications, replace the mounting plate. To do this, remove the sprocket, remove the plate and the locking rim using 2 suitable pullers. Install the new plate in place.
8. Check the condition of the camshaft bearing. If replacement is required, contact your Renault dealer or repair shop.
9. Inspect the rocker arms for wear and corrosion where they contact the camshaft lobes, and for scratches on the tappet contact side. Light scuffing is acceptable, but there should be no scratches or ridges. If wear is observed, replace the rocker arms. Please note that when installing a new camshaft, all rocker arms must be replaced.
Installation
10. Lubricate the bearings and carefully insert the camshaft into the head from the drive gear side.
11. Install the mounting plate, then insert and tighten the bolts. Make sure the camshaft rotates freely.
12. Lubricate the tappets and insert them into their original places in the cylinder block.
13. Install the camshaft sprocket, timing chain and cylinder head as described in Part A of this Section.
14. Turn the crankshaft so that piston No. 1 (from the flywheel side) was in the TDC position on the compression stroke.
15. Without rotating the crankshaft, position the distributor drive gear so that the grooves are at the 2 and 8 o'clock positions, and the larger sector faces away from the engine (see illustration).

16. Lower the drive gear and engage it with the oil pump drive shaft and camshaft. When engaged with the camshaft, the gear will rotate counterclockwise. Ultimately, the groove should be perpendicular to the crankshaft axis, and the larger sector should be shifted towards the flywheel (see illustration).

17. Install the distributor as described in Section 5B.
