Note: Later F-series engines do not have an intermediate shaft and a chain driven oil pump is fitted - see Part D of this Section.
Removal
1. Remove the toothed drive belt as described in Part D of this Section.
2. Remove the intermediate shaft sprocket as described in Part D of this Section.
3. Unscrew the rear lower timing belt cover from the cylinder block.
4. Unscrew the four bolts and remove the intermediate shaft housing, then remove the gasket (if any) (see illustrations).

5. Unscrew the two bolts and remove the oil pump drive gear protective cover and O-ring. Screw a suitable bolt into the pinion gear and remove it from the shaft (see illustrations).

6. Unscrew the two bolts, remove the washers and remove the support plate and intermediate shaft (see illustrations).

Inspection
7. Inspect the intermediate shaft and oil pump drive shaft for corrosion, scratches or wear ridges on the bearing journals and gear teeth. Replace components as necessary. Check the intermediate shaft bearings in the cylinder block for wear and if they are worn, contact your Renault dealer for replacement.
8. Temporarily install the support plate on the intermediate shaft and use a feeler gauge to check that the axial clearance is within the specifications. If it is greater than the maximum allowable deviation, a new support plate must be installed, but first check the thrust surface on the shaft.
Installation
9. Clean the intermediate shaft housing and remove the oil seal using a screwdriver. Install the new seal in place with the open side facing the engine so that it is flush with the outer surface of the housing (see illustrations).
10.9a. Remove the intermediate shaft seal from the housing.
10.9b. Hammer the new seal into place.
10. Generously lubricate the intermediate shaft and insert it into place.
11. Position the support plate with the curved edge away from the crankshaft and install the two mounting bolts.
12. Place the new gasket on the pins in the cylinder block (see illustration).

If the gasket has not yet been used, apply CAF 4/60 THIHO sealant to the mating surface of the housing.
13. Generously lubricate the sealing lips of the oil seal, then install the housing in place. Install and tighten the mounting bolts.
14. Lubricate the oil pump drive gear and install it in place. Check that the grooves on the drive gear engage with the oil pump.
15. Install the rear lower drive belt cover onto the cylinder block and tighten the mounting bolts.
16. Place the new O-ring on the pinion cover, install the plate and secure it with two bolts.
17. Install the intermediate shaft sprocket and timing belt as described in Part D of this Section.
