Description
1. The fuel shut-off valve is located at the end of the high pressure fuel pump. It is designed to stop the fuel supply when the ignition is off. If the valve winding or power supply wiring is broken, the engine will not be able to start. The same thing will happen if the valve plunger gets stuck in the closed position. If the plunger gets stuck in the open position, the engine cannot be stopped by turning off the ignition.
2. If the valve coil is damaged and the engine cannot run, a temporary repair can be made by removing the valve as described in the following points. Install the valve body without the plunger and spring. Insulate the wire so that it cannot touch the ground. The engine can now be started normally, but to stop it you must use the lever on the fuel pump (or turn off the engine by engaging the gear).
Without coded electronic unit
Removal
Warning: Do not allow dirt to enter the fuel pump. When installing, use a new sealing washer or O-ring.
3. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
4. Remove the rubber cover (where it is applied), then unscrew the terminal nut and disconnect the wire from the top of the solenoid valve.
5. Carefully clean the area around the valve, then unscrew and remove it, and discard the sealing washer or O-ring. Remove the plunger and spring if they remain in the pump. Squeeze the hand filling bulb (where applicable - see Chapter 7) to wash away dirt.
Installation
6. Install in reverse order, using a new sealing washer or O-ring. Tighten the solenoid valve to the specified tightening torque Specifications.
With coded electronic unit
Note: A special kit is used to drill out the screws that secure the block to the fuel pump. Use new screws when installing.
Removal
7. The coded solenoid valve is mounted on the left side of the fuel pump.
8. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
9. On models with a Bosch fuel pump, disconnect the throttle cable from the lever on the pump. Remove the crankcase ventilation oil separator from the left front of the engine to access the solenoid mounting bolts.

10. Now you need to drill out the heads of the mounting bolts. If you have a Renault kit, position the pipe on one of the bolts and drill a 4.0mm deep hole in it using a 4.0mm drill bit (lightly oil the drill bit to make drilling easier). Remove the mounting bolt. Repeat the procedure with the remaining bolts.
11. Disconnect the wiring from the valve. Remove the plastic cover and unscrew the valve.
12. On models equipped with a Lucas fuel pump, the fuel pump must be removed from the engine to replace the solenoid valve (see next chapter).
13. After removing the pump, remove the protective inserts from the valve.
14. Protective inserts are secured with bolts. Now it is necessary to drill out the heads of these bolts so that they can be removed as described above in point 10.
15. Disconnect the wiring. Remove the cover and unscrew the valve.
Installation
16. On models equipped with a Bosch fuel pump, tighten the valve retaining nut and install the plastic cover. Tighten the new mounting bolts until their heads break off.
17. On models equipped with a Lucas fuel pump, tighten the valve to the specified torque Specifications. Install the cover onto the valve, making sure the wiring is routed correctly. Install the protective inserts using new bolts. Make sure the spacers are installed correctly (where available). Tighten the bolts, then remove the heads from the bolts. Install the fuel pump on the engine (see next chapter).
