Replacing brake fluid (Renault 19)

Not only does the above-mentioned danger of vapor locks make it necessary to change the brake fluid, but water that gets into the brake fluid can also cause corrosion of the brake cylinders and pipes. It is also necessary to remove rubber particles from worn sealing cuffs.

When changing brake fluid, proceed in the same way as when removing air. About 2 liters of fresh brake fluid are required.

1. Remove brake fluid from the reservoir using a pipette or a clean syringe.

2. Fill with fresh brake fluid and top it up regularly if necessary.

3. Each nipple should pump 500 cm³ of brake fluid. This relatively high amount of brake fluid will ensure that the new brake fluid is not simply mixed with the old one, but that the entire system is filled with new brake fluid.

4. If you want to play it safe, you can remove the front brake calipers and pump out the brake fluid with the pistons fully recessed into the brake cylinders. This will drain most of the brake fluid from the front cylinders faster.

Note: Recommendation: old brake fluid should not be poured down the drain. It should be collected in a separate container and disposed of in a special waste container.
