On all modifications of Renault 19, electric fan motors have three speeds, which are switched on using variable resistance and, accordingly, electric current. Thus, regardless of the speed of movement, air is blown into the car interior by a centrifugal fan. The fan is housed in a water drain pan under the shroud in the engine compartment.
Fan Troubleshooting
1. If the fan does not run in any of the positions, first check the appropriate fuse.
2. If the fuse is good, the fan switch may be the cause.
3. Check the switch for current flow in all positions.
4. If the switch is not the problem, then run an auxiliary wire from the positive pole of the battery to the contact of terminal 1 (white wire) electric fan motor.
5. If the fan does not work again, the motor is burned out and needs to be replaced.
6. If the fan only runs at one or two speeds, check the rotary switch on all stages for current flow.
7. If it's not the switch, then check the contact connection on the electric fan motor.
8. If no fault is found there, then additional resistance remains as the last possible cause of the fault.
Removing the fan
If the fan does not work or only works at one of the speeds, then an oxidized pin connection may be the cause. If one of the two resistances (shown by arrows) burnt out, before installing a new resistance, be sure to check the ease of movement of the electric fan motor. Often, due to heavy running, the resistance cannot be completely cooled in the air flow and begins to heat up very much due to the increased power consumed by the motor, and as a result it burns out. A poorly lubricated electric fan motor draws attention with hissing noises.
1. Remove the fan shroud.
2. Disconnect the wires from the battery.
3. Remove the screws on the left and right of the fan.
4. Disconnect the connector.
5. Remove the fan from the left side of the drain pan (while the fan must be rotated to a certain position).
6. Disconnect the connector from the electric fan motor.
7. Release the clips and separate the halves of the fan housing.
8. Pull out the motor and disconnect it from the fan shaft.
9. When installing, the seal between the fan and the water drain pan must be in perfect condition and properly seated, otherwise water may enter the inside of the car body.
10. Do not forget to check the operation of the fan before final assembly.
Removing the resistance of the electric fan motor
1. Disconnect the pin block in the optional fan resistor.
2. Remove the resistance from the mounting in the engine, to do this, release both clamps.
3. When installing, pay attention to ensure that the resistance enters the retaining tabs of the engine clamp.
