Starter parts with gearbox: 1 – pull-in relay; 2 – gearbox unit; 3 – nut and washer of the pull-in relay; 4 – planetary gear; 5 – plate; 6 - anchor; 7 – rubber seal; 8 – back cover; 9, 19, 21 – bushings; 10 – cap; 11, 22 – screws; 12 – washer, spacer and split washer of the anchor shaft; 13 – brush holder assembly; 14 – brush; 15 – brush spring; 16 – stator winding; 17 – tension bolt; 18 – starter housing; 20 – Front starter cover; 23 – starter drive; 24 – fork
When working, refer to Figure 8.6.
Work order:
- remove the starter as described above;
- apply alignment marks to the rear cover of the starter;
Figure 8.7. Removing the cap from the end of the anchor shaft
- unscrew the mounting screws and remove the cap from the armature shaft (Figure 8.7);
Figure 8.8. Removing the split locking washer
- remove the split lock washer from the end of the armature shaft (Figure 8.8), remove the washers and spacer, remembering their position;
Figure 8.9. Unscrewing the nut securing the ground wire from the pull-in relay
- unscrew the "ground" wire mounting nut from the pull-in relay (Figure 8.9);
Figure 8.10. Unscrewing the tie bolts
Figure 8.11. Removing the rear cover of the starter
- unscrew the two tie bolts (Figure 8.10) and remove the rear cover of the starter (Figure 8.11);
- remove the brush holder assembly together with the rubber wiring seal in the starter housing;
Figure 8.12. Brushes in the brush holder
- remove the brushes with springs from the brush holders, detach the holders from the base (Figure 8.12);
- inspect the brushes. Replace damaged or worn (less than 10-12 mm) brushes. Wipe the anchor collector with a napkin soaked in gasoline. Carefully clean the burnt collector with "zero" sandpaper and blow to remove abrasive particles;
Figure 8.13. Fixing the brushes in the brush holder using the head
- install the brushes into the holders and assemble the unit using the head (Figure 8.13); the brushes must move in the brush holder without jamming;
Figure 8.14. Installing the brush holder assembly on the armature commutator
- install the brush holder assembly onto the starter armature collector (Figure 8.14) and remove the locking head, making sure that the brushes rest against the collector;
- perform the remaining operations in the reverse order of removal, align the marks on the cover and body, correctly install the washers and spacer on the armature shaft;
- install the starter on the car.
