Rear axle beam assembly — removal and installation (Renault Symbol 2)

Tightening torques:
  • Beam nut - 55 Nm
  • Wheel bolt - 90 Nm
  • Upper shock absorber support nut - 20 Nm
  • Lower shock absorber support bolt - 105 Nm

Removal



1. Place the vehicle on a lift.

2. Remove the rear wheels.

3. Press the brake pedal and lock it in this position.

4. Disconnect the brake pipes from the wheel cylinders.

5. Disconnect the brake force compensator rod from the rear axle beam.

6. In the passenger compartment: loosen the parking brake cable adjustment nut.

7. Under the vehicle: Remove the two heat shields and disconnect the two parking brake cables (A) from the body.

8. Unscrew the suspension arm mounting nuts (B) without removing the studs.

9. Place a hydraulic jack under the axle beams.

10. Unscrew the bolt securing the lower support of one shock absorber.

Note: To make it easier to remove the bolt, use a pry bar to lift the axle beam.


11. Remove the suspension spring.

Note: Before removing the second shock absorber support bolt, two people must hold the axle beam in place; after removing the bolt, the axle has an unstable support.




12. Unscrew the six nuts securing the beam support to the body.

13. Carefully lower the axle assembly.

Installation



1. Place the axle assembly under the body mounting points. Check the direction of the axle support pin (A): the pin should point upwards.

2. While tilting the axle beam, install the suspension springs and lower shock absorber support bolts (the work is carried out by two people).
