The rear wheel hub bearings are similar in design to the front wheel hub bearings, and do not require maintenance or adjustment during operation. The bearing condition is assessed by the axial clearance value, which does not exceed 0.03 mm. The axial clearance is measured in the same way as for the front hubs.

Removal procedure:
  • engage reverse gear (or set the selector lever to position "P");
  • raise the rear of the car and place safety jacks under the body;
  • remove the wheel from the desired side;
  • remove the brake drum;

  • using a suitable cylindrical mandrel, press the bearing out of the hub (Fig. 5.17);
  • clean the hub thoroughly from grease and dirt, remove possible nicks and burrs with a file. Inspect the hub for cracks and other damage.

The bearing and retaining ring are replaced with new ones.

Installation procedure:
  • make sure (if possible) if there is grease in the internal cavity of the bearing, lightly lubricate the surfaces of the bearing rings with consistent grease;
  • using a mandrel, press the bearing into the hub, applying force to the outer ring until it stops against the shoulder of the brake drum;
  • install a new snap ring;
  • install the brake drum on the pre-lubricated hub axle;
  • install a new lock nut and tighten it to the specified torque;
  • perform the remaining operations in the reverse order of removal;
  • press the brake pedal several times to adjust the position of the brake pads;
  • make sure the wheel rotates easily and without sticking.
