Removal

1. Remove the clutch pedal as described in Section Checking the stroke, removing and installing the clutch pedal and tie a piece of twine to the end of the clutch cable.

2. On all engines except the E7J, remove the air cleaner assembly and its ducts (refer to Chapter Power and exhaust systems).

3. After unhooking the cable, separate its casing from the bracket on the transmission. Moving along the cable, release it from the mounting brackets and ties.

4. Release the end of the clutch cable from the bulkhead and remove the cable from the car. When the end of the cable appears, untie the twine from it and leave it hanging in the bulkhead - it will help pull the cable into the working position during installation.

5. Inspect the cable for wear on the ends, housing, or cable itself. Make sure the cable moves smoothly and without jerking in the housing. Replace the cable if it is worn or damaged.

Installation

6. Bring the cable to the working position, laying it in its original place, and using twine, pull the end of the cable through the bulkhead into the passenger compartment. Secure the end of the cable in the bulkhead.

7. Secure the cable in the operating position with all clamps and ties and place the transmission-facing end of the cable housing into the mounting bracket.

8. Install the clutch pedal and check the operation of the automatic regulator as described in Section Checking the stroke, removing and installing the clutch pedal.

9. Install the air cleaner assembly and its ducts.
