- Characteristic are the rhythmic noises of impacts or crunching when pressing the accelerator pedal and when driving in tightness. If the sound changes depending on how the steering wheel is turned, then the hinge on the side of the wheel is most likely defective.
- Vibration and shaking of the steering wheel when the wheels are turned also indicate a damaged outer joint.
- A crunching sound when pulling away with the wheels turned does not necessarily indicate a problem with the drive shafts. This may be due to the wheel bearing, see chapter Suspension and steering.
