Removal

1. Remove the toothed drive belt as described in Chapter 5.

2. To remove the camshaft sprocket, hold it with a metal rod with two bolts inserted into the holes in the sprocket and unscrew the bolt. The Renault tool is shown in the illustration.

6.2 Renault camshaft sprocket locking tool.

3. Remove the sprocket from the end of the camshaft. Note that there is a protrusion on its inner surface that fits into a groove at the end of the camshaft.

4. To remove the crankshaft sprocket, you may need a special puller.

5. Remove the woodruff key from the groove in the crankshaft (on later model engines there is no key, but there is a protrusion in the sprocket).

6. Unscrew the nut and remove the tensioner mechanism from the stud on the front cover (see illustration).

6.6 Remove the timing belt tensioner mechanism.

Inspection

7. Inspect the sprocket teeth for nicks and other damage. Also inspect the water pump teeth.

8. Manually unscrew the tensioner pulley and check that it rotates freely. Do not try to clean it with solvent, it may get into the bearing and wash out the grease. If there is wear, replace the tensioner mechanism.

Installation

9. Install the tensioner mechanism on the strut on the front cover, then tighten the nut by hand.

10. Where applicable, install the Woodruff key into the keyway in the crankshaft.

11. Place the sprocket on the crankshaft.

12. Check that the sprocket engages the key at the end of the camshaft, then tighten the bolt to the torque specified in the Specifications, holding the sprocket using the method described in step 2.

13. Install the toothed drive belt as described in Chapter 5.
