Assembling the modulator
Note: Before you begin, please refer to the Warning given at the beginning Chapter 6.
Removal
1. Remove the battery as described in Section 5A.
2. Where necessary, unscrew the two mounting nuts, then remove the ignition module from the mounting studs and move it to the side (see illustration).
23.2. Loosen the mounting nuts and remove the ignition module from the mounting studs.
3. Unfasten the rubber belt and separate the expansion tank from the modulator (see illustration).
23.3. Release the expansion tank and move it away from the modulator.
4. Remove the brake master cylinder (see Chapter 8).
5. Loosen the mounting screw and remove the relay cover from the modulator assembly (see illustration).
23.5. Loosen the fastening screw and remove the relay cover.
6. Disconnect the large 15-pin connector, the square 4-pin connector, and the return pump ground strap from the modulator.
7. Be prepared for some liquid to leak out; place a rag under the modulator tube connectors.
8. Wipe the area around the modulator tube connectors. Draw the relative positions of the tubes to facilitate subsequent installation. These four tubes are color-coded, and the modulator connectors are also labeled. Unscrew the connecting nuts and carefully remove the tubes (see illustrations).

23.8b. Loosen the modulator connecting nuts using a special ring spanner.
Plug the ends of the tubes and the modulator holes to minimize brake fluid loss and prevent dirt from entering the block. Rinse any spilled liquid from the components with cold water.
9. Loosen the mounting nuts and remove the modulator assembly from the engine compartment.
Warning: Do not attempt to disassemble the modulator. Rebuilding the block is a complex job and should be left to a Renault dealer.
Installation
10. Install in the reverse order of removal, paying attention to the following:
- Tighten the modulator assembly mounting nuts securely.
- Install the brake pipes, each to its respective coupling, and tighten the coupling nuts to the tightening torque specified in the Specifications.
- Make sure the wiring is properly installed and the connectors are securely connected.
- Before installing the battery, bleed the brake hydraulic system completely (see Chapter 6).
ABS electronic control unit
Removal
11. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery. Loosen the mounting screw and remove the relay cover from the modulator assembly.
12. Disconnect the three electrical wiring connectors from the electronic control unit. Remove the six Phillips screws and lift the electronic control unit off the modulator assembly (see illustrations).

Installation
13. Install in reverse order. Make sure the ECU mounting screws are tight and the wiring connectors are securely connected.
Front wheel speed sensor
Removal
14. Block the rear wheels and apply the handbrake. Jack up the front of the vehicle and support it on axle stands. Remove the front wheel.
15. Working in the engine compartment, release the sensor wiring connector from its bracket on the upper strut mount. Disconnect the connector and remove the sensor wiring seal from the wing spar (see illustration).

16. Route the sensor wire through the wheel arch and release it from the bracket on the suspension strut (see illustration).

17. Remove the bolt securing the sensor to the steering knuckle and remove the sensor assembly and its wiring (see illustrations).

Installation
18. Before installation, apply a thin layer of universal grease to the tip of the sensor.
19. Make sure the sealing surfaces of the sensor and steering knuckle are clean. Install the sensor by pressing it with your hand. Install the sensor mounting bolt and tighten it to the specified tightening torque Specifications.
20. Turn the hub so that one of the teeth of the contact ring is flush with the tip of the sensor. Using feeler gauges, measure the gap between the tooth and the sensor (see illustration).
23.20. Check the gap between the front wheel sensor and the contact ring.
Rotate the hub and repeat the check on a few other teeth. If the gap size does not correspond to the data given in Specifications, please contact your Renault dealer.
21. Make sure the sensor wiring is routed correctly, then staple it into position in the rack bracket.
22. Route the wiring into the engine compartment and connect its connector. Insert the connector into its mounting bracket, then install the sealing ring into the wing spar.
23. Install the wheel. Lower the vehicle to the ground and tighten the wheel bolts to the specified torque Specifications.
Rear wheel sensor
Removal
24. Block the front wheels, select reverse (or "P") and release the handbrake. Jack up the rear of the vehicle and support it on axle stands. Remove the wheel.
25. Trace the wiring from the sensor to the wiring connector on the right side of the vehicle (see illustration).

Release the connector from its mounting bracket and disconnect the wiring from the main wiring harness.
26. Moving along the sensor wiring, release it from the mounting brackets.
27. Remove the bolt securing the sensor unit to the trailing arm. Remove the sensor assembly and wiring (see illustration).

Installation
28. Before installation, apply a thin layer of universal grease to the tip of the sensor.
29. Make sure the sealing surfaces of the sensor and trailing arm are clean. Install the sensor without using any tools. Tighten the mounting bolt to the torque specified in the Specifications.
30. Turn the disc so that one of the teeth of the contact ring is aligned with the tip of the sensor. Using feeler gauges, measure the gap between the tooth and the sensor (see illustration).

Rotate the hub and repeat the check on a few other teeth. If the gap size does not correspond to the data given in Specifications, please contact your Renault dealer.
31. Make sure the sensor wiring is routed correctly and secured with all necessary staples. Connect the wiring connector and secure it with staples into the bracket.
32. Install the wheel: Lower the vehicle to the ground and tighten the wheel bolts to the specified torque Specifications.
Front wheel sensor contact ring
Removal
33. The contact rings of the front wheel sensor are pressed into the outer CV joints of the drive shafts. They usually do not require attention, but if teeth break off, the rings can be replaced as follows.

34. Remove the drive shaft as described in Section 8.
35. Using a puller, carefully pull the contact ring off the end of the CV joint.
Installation
36. Make sure that the contact surfaces of the contact ring and CV joint are clean and dry. Apply a thin layer of blocking compound to the inside of the ring.
37. Install the contact ring on the CV joint and drive the ring in up to the mounting flange. Please note that the ring must not be skewed, otherwise the ABS system will not function properly.
38. Install the drive shaft (see Section 8), then check the gap between the sensor and the ring (see point 30 above).
Rear wheel sensor contact ring
39. The contact rings of the rear wheel sensors are mounted in the rear brake discs and cannot be replaced separately. Inspect the rings for damage such as chipped teeth. If replacement is necessary, replace the brake disc as described in Chapter 18.
Relay
40. The solenoid valve relay and the return pump relay are installed in the modulator block assembly. To access them, unscrew the relay cover fastening screw and remove the cover. Any of the relays can then be simply removed from the block (see illustration).
