Removal
1. Block the front wheels, select reverse (or "P") and release the handbrake. Jack up the rear of the vehicle and support it on axle stands.
2. Working under the vehicle, unscrew the nuts securing the exhaust system heat shield to the underbody. Remove the heat shield from under the vehicle.
3. Unscrew the lock nut and adjusting nut from the end of the handbrake cable rod. Unhook the equalizer from the end of the handbrake cable rod, then release the rod from the guide.
4. Working inside the car, push back the trim and unfasten the seat belt buckles on both front seats. Cut the carpet behind the control arm assembly to access its mounting hardware. Alternatively, remove the seats and lift the floor covering.

5. Disconnect the handbrake indicator switch wires from the rear of the lever (see illustration).

6. Working inside the cabin, unscrew the two bolts securing the lever to the floor and remove the assembly.
Installation
7. Install in reverse order. Adjust the handbrake (see Section 1).
