When working, be guided by Fig. 8.6.
Operating procedure:
- remove the starter as described above;
- put on the rear cover of the starter installation marks;

- unscrew the fastening screws and remove the cap from the armature shaft (pic. 8.7);

- remove the split lock washer from the end of the armature shaft (pic. 8.8), remove the washers and spacer, remembering their position;

- unscrew the wire fastening nut from the solenoid relay «masses» (pic. 8.9);

- unscrew the two pinch bolts (pic. 8.10) and remove the rear cover of the starter (pic. 8.11);
- remove the brush holder assembly along with the rubber wiring seal in the starter housing;

- remove the brushes with springs from the brush holders, unfasten the holders from the base (pic. 8.12);
- inspect the brushes. Replace damaged or worn (less than 10–12 mm) brushes. Wipe the anchor collector with a cloth soaked in gasoline. Carefully clean the burnt collector «null» sandpaper and blow to remove abrasive particles;

- install the brushes in the holders and assemble the assembly using the head (pic. 8.13); brushes should move without jamming in the brush holder;

- install the brush holder assembly on the starter armature manifold (pic. 8.14) and remove the fixing head, making sure that the brushes rest against the collector;
- perform the rest of the operations in the reverse order of removal, align the marks on the cover and body, correctly install the washers and spacer on the armature shaft;
- install the starter on the car.
