Most of the actions included in this Part are based on the assumption that the engine is installed in the vehicle. Therefore, if this information is used when rebuilding an already removed engine, many of the procedures described here can be skipped.
Engine - general description
The engine has a 4-cylinder, in-line design with an overhead camshaft, and is mounted transversely at the front of the car.
The cylinders are machined directly into the cast iron block. The crankshaft is secured in the cylinder block by five main bearings. Thrust washers in the central main bearing determine the axial play of the crankshaft.
The connecting rods are connected to the crankshaft by means of connecting rod bearings with liners, and to the pistons by means of fixed piston pins. The pistons are made of aluminum alloy and are equipped with three rings, two compression rings and one oil scraper ring.
The overhead camshaft is mounted in the cylinder head and is driven from the crankshaft by a toothed belt, which also drives the water pump. The camshaft controls the valves via rocker arms mounted on a shaft attached to the top of the cylinder head.
The engine uses a semi-hermetic crankcase ventilation system.
Lubrication is supplied to the system by an oil pump installed in the crankcase and driven by the crankshaft.
Repair operations performed without removing the engine from the vehicle:
- Removal and installation the cylinder head.
- Removal and installation the toothed drive belt and sprockets.
- Replacing the camshaft oil seal.
- Removal and installation the camshaft.
- Removal and installation the pallet.
- Removal and installation of connecting rods and pistons.*
- Removal and installation the oil pump.
- Replacing crankshaft seals.
- Replacing engine mounts.
- Removal and installation the flywheel.
* Theoretically, pistons and connecting rods can be removed directly in the engine compartment (after removing the cylinder head and oil pan). However, this is not recommended, as such procedures are much easier and safer (from the point of view of the risk of damaging components) perform on a removed engine (see Part F of this Section).
