Note: The double row roller bearing is sealed, adjusted and filled with grease, so it does not require maintenance. Do not remove the bearing unless absolutely necessary, as it will be damaged during removal. Never tighten the hub nut in an attempt to "adjust" the bearing. A press will be required to disassemble the assembly; if this is not available, use a large bench vise and suitable pads (type of large nests). The inner bearing rings are pressed onto the hub; if such a ring remains on the hub, a suitable pointed bearing puller will be required.
Examination
1. To check the front wheel bearings for wear, measure the wheel's lateral play. Position the micrometer so that its probe touches the hub disc. The runout should be 0 - 0.05 mm, otherwise the bearings are excessively worn and should be replaced.
Removal
Note: A new bearing retaining ring will be required during installation.

2. Remove the steering knuckle assembly (see Chapter 2), then unscrew the screws securing the brake disc protective cover and remove the cover from the hub.
3. Support the steering knuckle securely with blocks or clamp it in a vice. Using a suitable spacer sleeve that rests only on the inner end of the hub, press the hub out of the bearing. If the bearing inner race remains on the hub, remove it using a suitable bearing puller. (see note above), then remove the thrust washer from the hub, remembering its orientation.
4. Remove the bearing retaining ring from the inner end of the steering knuckle assembly.
5. Where necessary, install the bearing inner race onto its outer race, turn the bearing inside out and securely support the inner surface of the steering knuckle. Using a suitable spacer sleeve, bearing only on the inner race, press the complete bearing assembly out of the steering knuckle.
6. Thoroughly clean the hub and steering knuckle from dirt and grease. File down any burrs or rough spots that might interfere with assembly. Inspect components for cracks, other damage, or signs of wear and replace if necessary. The bearings and their retaining ring must be replaced after each removal.
Installation
7. When assembling, make sure (if possible), that the new bearing is filled with grease. Apply a thin layer of oil to the outer bearing race and hub shaft.
8. Before installing a new bearing, remove the plastic covers that protect the seals, but leave the inner plastic sleeve in place to hold the inner races together.
9. Support the steering knuckle and install the bearing into it. Press the bearing into position using a suitable spacer sleeve supported only by the outer ring.
10. Once the bearing is positioned correctly, secure it with a new retaining ring and remove the plastic sleeve. Apply a small amount of grease to the seals.
11. Install the thrust washer on the hub with the flat surface facing the flange. Turn the hub over so that the outside is facing down and support it securely.
12. Place the bearing inner race onto the end of the hub. Place the bearing on the hub using a spacer sleeve that rests only on its inner race, so that the bearing reaches the thrust washer (see illustration).

Make sure the hub rotates freely. Remove any excess oil or grease.
13. Install the brake disc protective cover onto the steering knuckle and tighten the screws that secure it.
14. Install the steering knuckle assembly as described in Chapter 2.
