Note: On models with automatic transmission, it is not possible to remove it separately from the engine.
Front oil seal
(from the pulley side)
Note: When installing the front plate on the cylinder block, you will need CAF 4/60 THIXO paste.
1. Remove the timing belt, crankshaft sprocket, and intermediate shaft sprocket/roller, see Chapters 5, 6 and 7 (depending on the model).
2. Remove the pan as described in Chapter 13 or 14, depending on the model.
3. Unscrew the bolts and remove the front plate from the cylinder block (see illustration).
16.3. Remove the front plate and oil seal.
On engines without a countershaft, remove the oil pump drive chain guide block from the pins if it is not securely fastened.
4. Scrape off all traces of sealant from the plate and cylinder block.
5. Using a screwdriver, remove the old seal and clean the bearing surface.
6. Install the new oil seal so that it is flush with the outer surface of the front plate.
7. Lubricate the sealing lips of the oil seal. Apply a bead of CAF 4/60 THIXO paste to the mating surface of the front plate, being careful not to block the oil groove.
8. Install the front plate and insert the mounting bolts. The two bolts located at 2 and 8 o'clock should also be coated with sealant as they pass through into the crankcase. Gradually tighten the mounting bolts in a diagonal sequence.
9. Install the tray as described in Chapter 13 or 14, depending on the model.
10. Install the crankshaft sprocket and timing belt, see Chapters 5, 6 and 7 (depending on the model).
Rear oil seal
(from the flywheel side)
11. Remove the flywheel/drive plate as described in Chapter 17.
12. Using a screwdriver, remove the old oil seal, being careful not to damage the surface of the crankshaft.
13. Inspect the contact surface with the oil seal on the crankshaft. If it is rough or has grooves in the area where the old seal touched, the new one should be installed at a slightly shallower depth.
14. Wipe the contact surface with the oil seal, then dip the new oil seal in oil and place it on the crankshaft with the closed side facing out. Do not damage the sealing lip of the oil seal when placing it on the crankshaft.
15. Using a metal tube, drive the seal to the previously marked depth.
