Carburetor models
Note: To accurately perform this procedure, you will need a tachometer and exhaust gas analyzer.
1. Before making any adjustments, ensure that the spark plugs are in good condition and properly gapped. Also make sure that the breaker contact plates and ignition timing are adjusted correctly.
2. Make sure all electrical components are turned off when performing the following procedure. If the electric fan turns on, wait until it stops before continuing.
3. Connect the tachometer according to the manufacturer's instructions.
4. Remove the plug (where available) from the mixture adjustment screw.
5. Start the engine and allow it to run at fast idle until it warms up to normal operating temperature (the fan should turn on). Increase the engine speed to 2000 rpm for 30 seconds, repeating this every three minutes during the adjustment.
6. With the engine idling, turn the adjusting screw until the engine speed specified in the Specifications is reached (see illustration).

7. When you turn the mixture adjustment screw clockwise, the mixture becomes leaner, and vice versa. Adjust the mixture to the value specified in the Specifications.
8. If necessary, repeat the idle speed adjustment, then check the CO again until the specified values are achieved.
9. If required by law, install new caps on the adjustment screws.
Fuel injection models
10. The idle speed on all fuel injected models is electronically controlled and cannot be adjusted.
11. On all models with a catalytic converter, the CO content is also controlled electronically. This means that the only engine that can be adjusted is the E7P-720 (with 16 valves), which is not equipped with a catalytic converter. The adjustment is made by turning the screw on the CO adjustment potentiometer (see illustration).
