1. The exhaust system is checked on a cold engine. To facilitate inspection, raise the vehicle and support it on axle stands so that all exhaust components are visible and accessible.
2. Check exhaust pipes and connections for signs of leaks, corrosion and damage. Make sure all brackets and fasteners are in good condition and that all nuts and bolts are securely tightened. A leak in any of the connections or other parts of the system will usually show up as a black, sooty spot near the leak.
3. Rattling and other noises are often observed in the exhaust system, especially the brackets and fasteners. Try moving the pipes and mufflers. If components contact the body or suspension components, secure the system with new fasteners. Otherwise, separate the connections (if possible) and wrap the pipes as needed with heat-resistant material to take up the play.
4. The condition of the engine can be determined by the condition of the inside of the exhaust pipe.
