2. If regular maintenance is not performed, engine problems may occur, which is even more likely if you buy a used car. In such cases, additional work needs to be done.
3. If engine wear is suspected, check the compression, which will give you valuable information about the operation of its major components and help determine the extent of repairs required. If, for example, the test showed severe engine wear, the normal maintenance described in this Section would only be a waste of time and money, as it would not improve the engine's performance unless an extensive overhaul had been performed first.
4. Below are the actions most often needed to improve engine performance:

- Clean, inspect and test the battery (see "Weekly checks"),
- Check all engine fluids (see "Weekly checks"),
- Check the condition and tension of the auxiliary drive belt (Chapter 6)
- Replace spark plugs (Chapter 8).
- Check the condition of the air filter and replace it if necessary (Chapter 21).
- Replace the fuel filter (Chapter 26).
- Check the condition of all hoses (Chapter 5).
