3. Turn on the ignition and short-circuit the contacts with the connector terminals of the wire harness with a paper clip or a piece of wire. Be careful not to let the jumper wire touch bare metal.

4. If the fan starts to run and it is known that the engine was overheating before this test, then the thermal switch is faulty.

5. If the fan does not work after installing the jumper wire, the fan itself or its power supply circuit is faulty (including a fuse and, where present, a relay).

6. To check the serviceability of the removed switch for sure, immerse it in heated water like a thermostat (see Chapter 5) and, using a tester, determine the temperature at which the switch contacts close and open.

Removal

Note: A suitable sealant will be required during installation.

7. Drain the cooling system (see Section 1).

8. Release the multi-pin connector of the switch and disconnect it.

9. Unscrew the switch from the radiator and remove it.

Installation

10. Apply a small amount of sealant to the threads of the switch and screw it into the working position.

11. Connect and attach the multi-pin connector.

12. Fill the cooling system (see Section 1).
