For some models (including all models with ABS) disc brakes are installed on all wheels as standard; on other models, only the front wheels are equipped with disc brakes, while the rear brake units are equipped with drum brakes.
The front disc brakes are equipped with sliding type calipers, actuated by a single piston cylinder.
Drum brakes have leading and trailing shoes, which are actuated by wheel cylinders with twin pistons (one cylinder per wheel). The working brake cylinders are equipped with valves that regulate the hydraulic pressure applied to the rear brakes. These valves help prevent the rear wheel from locking during hard braking. In addition, the rear brake assemblies are equipped with a self-adjusting clearance adjuster. As the brake shoe linings wear, the brake pedal automatically activates the adjuster mechanism, which lengthens the shoe expansion bar, thereby compensating for the change in clearance between the lining and the drum.
The rear disc brakes feature sliding calipers actuated by a single piston cylinder and linked to the handbrake mechanism. These models are equipped with a load-sensing valve that regulates the hydraulic pressure applied to the rear brakes, helping to prevent the rear wheels from locking during emergency braking.
On all models, the handbrake provides application of the rear brakes via an independent mechanical drive.
