Note: On models with automatic transmission, it is not possible to remove the transmission alone, therefore the left oil seal (from the drive disk side) can only be replaced after removing the engine.
Front oil seal (from the pulley side)
1. This procedure is included in the oil pump removal and installation procedure in Chapter 11.
Rear oil seal (from the flywheel side)
2. Remove the flywheel as described in Chapter 13.
3. Note the location of the old oil seal in the cover, then remove it with a screwdriver and wipe the bearing surface. Alternatively, the oil seal can be removed as follows. Drill two small holes in the seal and screw self-tapping screws into them. Then use pliers to pull out the seal, grabbing the screws one by one.
4. Inspect the contact surface with the oil seal on the crankshaft. If it is rough or has grooves in the area where the old seal was in contact, the new one should be installed at a slightly shallower depth so that it rubs against an unworn surface.
5. Wipe the contact surface with the seal, then dip the new seal in engine oil and place it on the crankshaft, closed side out. Make sure that the sealing lip of the oil seal is not damaged.
6. Using a metal tube, hammer the seal into the hole.
