General description

1. On F3P engine models equipped with air conditioning, an electric power steering pump is used.

2. The operation of the pump is controlled by a pressure sensor in the pump outlet pipe and three or four relays (depending on the model).

3. The system is quite complex. If a malfunction occurs, contact your Renault dealer. The pump can be removed and installed as follows.

Removal

Note: New power steering line O-rings will be required during installation.

4. Remove the battery (Section 5A).

5. Apply the handbrake, jack up the front of the car and place it on axle stands.

6. Clamp the supply and return hoses as close to the pump as possible using special clamps. This will reduce fluid loss during subsequent steps.

7. Mark the connecting couplings to ensure correct installation later, then unscrew the connecting nuts of the tubes. Be prepared for the liquid to come out; place a container under the tubes. Spilled liquid cannot be reused. Disconnect both tubes and quickly seal their ends, as well as the pump couplings.

8. Remove the two pump upper bracket bolts. Working underneath the vehicle, remove the two lower strut bracket bolts.

9. Lift the pump and disconnect the electrical connectors from its base, which are now accessible. Draw the location of the wires to ensure proper installation later. Remove the pump and reservoir assembly.

Installation

10. Move the pump/tank assembly into working position. Connect the electrical wiring according to the marks made before removal.

11. Insert and tighten the four bracket mounting bolts.

12. Replace the O-rings of the tube connecting sleeves. Install the tubes onto the pump and tighten the union nuts.

13. Remove the clamps from the hoses. Install the battery (see Section 5A).

14. Lower the car to the ground. Bring the fluid level up to normal and bleed the power steering hydraulic system (Chapter 22).
