The vacuum pump in diesel-powered vehicles is located on the side of the cylinder head and is driven by the camshaft. The pump generates the necessary low pressure for the brake booster. Diesel engines have an additional vacuum pump because they do not have enough vacuum in the intake manifold, unlike gasoline engines.

Examination

1. Connect a vacuum gauge to the vacuum pump and start the engine. The pump, with the engine warmed up to operating temperature and running at 4000 rpm, should produce at least 700 mbar of pressure after three seconds.

Removal

2. Unscrew the vacuum pump mounting bolts and remove it (see illustration).

Installation

3. Install the vacuum pump 16 in place, replacing the old sealing gasket with a new one (see illustration).

Attention! When replacing the vacuum pump, it is necessary to replace the cam 58 with a new one (see illustration 11.3).
